trekking around Dong Van Commune |
Located in the northeast, more than 100km away from the centre of Ha Long city and right next to the border with China, the mountainous district of Binh Lieu has a peaceful atmosphere and spectacular landscapes of untouched beauty.
In July and August, the district is decorated with the golden colour of terraced fields as they enter harvest season, while in March and April, trẩu flowers (Vernicia Montana) bloom, which are only found in Binh Lieu, and the whole region bursts in an array of stunning colours.
Though it is beautiful in every season, many will like it best in the autumn. Tourists often flock to Binh Lieu to enjoy the beauty of white reed hills, the golden terraced rice fields or visit the Dao villages in the hamlets such as Song Mooc or Khe Tien, the highest and most remote hamlets.
Compared to other forms of tourism like car or motorbike, trekking trips are forms of slow travel that let travellers experience a place more fully and deeply, and a popular recreational activity that provides positive impacts on health and well-being. This type of discovery tourism is especially popular with Western, Korean and Japanese tourists because trekking not only provides a closer look but also gives a feeling of being more immersed in the natural environment and local culture. At the same time, trekking also satisfies tourists' passion for exploring and learning about untouched lands.
As one of the first foreign visitors to explore the trekking route from Song Mooc village to Khe Tien village, Dong Van commune, Binh Lieu district, Alexandre Betrand from France said: “I love the natural scenery here: the poetic golden rice fields, the small, winding roads, winding along the rice fields. I am really interested in the unique ethnic culture. It is truly a wonderful and unforgettable experience.”
Only about a dozen kilometers long and can be completed in 4 to 6 hours, the trekking route in Dong Van is quite suitable for many tourists. The trekking route goes through a diverse natural and cultural landscape from rice fields to residential roads.
Tourists can enjoy the beauty of anise forests, cinnamon forests, streams winding around villages, large yards where people are drying cassava, houses with red earth walls that are decade- old, etc. Trekking in Dong Van brings a multi-sensory experience to every nature-lover.
