Queenstown welcomes fresh snow dump for school holidays

Queenstown
Queenstown’s spectacular mountains have been blanketed in snow, with the Southern Lakes ski areas reporting as much as 50cm in 48 hours, providing a fresh new base for the 2024 winter season.

With all four of the region’s ski areas now open, The Remarkables has recorded 70cm of snow already this season, and Cardrona Alpine Resort has welcomed a 63cm base.

Destination Queenstown Chief Executive Mat Woods said the heavy snow fall is fantastic news for locals and visitors looking for a winter snow experience in Queenstown.

“Queenstown continues to be one of the most popular ski destinations in the world with its variety of ski areas to suit every level, combined with the region’s renowned après ski scene. The season’s snow dump has set up brilliant conditions with all mountains now open, ready to welcome Australian visitors in what’s set to be a stellar ski season,” Mat said.

As the Southern Hemisphere’s premiere four-season destination, Queenstown’s ski resorts offer world-class facilities and enviable conditions. The resorts include Cardona Alpine Resort, The Remarkables, Coronet Peak and Treble Cone, together offering beginner, intermediate and advanced runs rivalling the best in the world.

New updates from the ski resorts this season:

The Remarkables' new Shadow Basin chairlift is now open for the 2024 ski season. The new higher chairlift alignment increases lift-accessible terrain in Shadow Basin by 47 hectares, which is nearly 50 percent more than the previous chairlift. Some of The Remarkables' best advanced and expert freeride runs are now accessible directly from the lift, without the need to hike, including Alta Chute, Boulder Basin, East-Face, The Nose, Front Face and Sunrise Face.

Cardrona Alpine Resort has announced plans to build the Soho Basin Express lift, set to open in Winter 2025. It’s possibly the biggest project in New Zealand skiing history, opening up a whopping 150ha of new terrain and will make Cardrona Alpine Resort the biggest single ski area in Aotearoa.
