5 Outdoor Summer adventures to experience outside of the city

Niagara Falls experience
If you are heading to New York for a city fix in Summer, you must venture beyond the city for some summer loving fun and here are some suggestions for an adventure of a lifetime!

1) Visit Letchworth State Park.

In the southwest region of the Finger Lakes, Letchworth State Park is a stunning outdoor experience with lots of activities on offer. Surrounded by lush forests, the 14,350-acre state park features three large waterfalls between cliffs as tall as 600 feet, carved by the Genesee River. This park is full of hiking trails, but also offers horseback riding and biking trails as well as white-water rafting, kayaking, and even hot air ballooning. The park is as pretty as a picture and offers activities in every season, however, summer is a real standout when enjoying the water activities.

2)Visit local wineries.

What better time than summer to sip on a crisp cold glass of wine overlooking a beautiful vineyard? New York State is full of wineries and foodie trails. Head to Pellegrini Vineyards and Bedell Cellars in Long Island’s North Fork for international medal-winning wines. Brotherhood, America’s oldest winery, is another can’t-miss stop for wine lovers in the Hudson Valley, offering tours through its underground cellars. Sip on a vino with scenic lake views along one of the Finger Lakes’ most revered wine trails: Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, Keuka Lake Wine Trail, and Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Find your New York State winery getaway guide here.

3) Niagara Falls experience.

Catch some serious spray off the magnificent Niagara Falls on board the Maid of the Mist! The boat tour brings you right inside (almost) the 600,000 gallons of cascading water. If you are more daring, why not step things up a notch with Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours. On the tour, you’ll travel through the Niagara River Gorge right into the heart of Devil's Hole Class 5 rapids! These boats are specially designed to withstand turbulence and summer is the best time to go because you most definitely will end up completely soaking wet! If you do prefer to stay dry, there are covered boats available too.

4) Wild Walk the Adirondacks.

Head to where the wild things are: the Wild Center in the Adirondacks! The famous “Wild Walk,” allows you to stroll on an elevated trail through the treetops and includes playful elements like a human-sized bird nest for example. The walk is educational with many exhibits about local species of animals inside the learning center and the whole experience allows you to feel one with nature.

5) Enjoy a Canal Event.

Take a tour of New York State’s scenic canals and enjoy a canal event! For the super fit types, The Erie Canalway Challenge is open for registration, welcoming everyone to participate in cycling, paddling, running, hiking, or walking along the New York State Canal System which spans 524 miles. If you are there in June, don’t miss Fairport Canal Days, one of the state’s most popular canal side arts festivals that is now in its 46th year. Grab your kayak and head to Ausable Chasm (also known as the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks) for a leisurely row through naturally formed sandstone aging back 500 million years. A beautiful sight to behold.
