Travel back in time with a visit to the well-preserved samurai district in Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture

Flourished as a castle town in the early 17th century, the streets of Kakunodate are lined with impressive samurai residences and traditional architecture, giving you a glimpse of Japan’s feudal past.
 
Kakunodate makes one of the most popular cherry blossoms viewing spots from late April to early May.

Stroll along the samurai district or the banks of the Hinokinai River and admire at the scenic beauty of the weeping cherry blossoms.
