An array of new public spaces and revitalised buildings have activated Perth CBD and surrounds. The vibrant waterfront precinct of Elizabeth Quay celebrates Perth’s love affair with the Swan River. Boasting new hotels such as The RitzCarlton Perth and DoubleTree Hilton Perth Waterfront, riverfront views, alfresco and rooftop dining, public art and playgrounds have never been more accessible. Connecting Perth CBD to Northbridge, Yagan Square connects people to place and is a celebration of Western Australia’s Aboriginal heritage. Not to be missed is the spectacular new WA Museum Boola Bardip, located in the Perth Cultural Centre; across the river, connected by the Matagarup Bridge, is the shiny new 60,000 seat worldclass Optus Stadium. 

• Natural attractions

Overlooking the Swan River and Perth city skyline, the stunning Kings Park and Botanic Garden (Kaarta Komba) is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world. At 400 hectares, it’s bigger than Central Park in New York, and is home to more than 3,000 species of native plants, as well as around 80 bird species. Tour its botanic gardens and spring wildflowers solo, or on a guided tour. Alternatively, discover the park’s rich culture with an Aboriginal guide. Within an hour of Perth’s CBD, you can swim with wild dolphins at Rockingham, cruise the canals in Mandurah (Mandjoogoordap), discover crystal caves in Yanchep National Park and hike the trails in the Perth Hills.

Explore the island by scenic flight, segway, skydive, hop-on hop-off bus, waterbike or kayak; grab a snorkel or join a tour to discover the abundance of spectacular marine life, and meet the world’s friendliest animal — the quokka. The A Class Reserve is a carfree zone, and hiring a bicycle is the best way to get around.
