Did you know that the Toki – or the crested ibis – is a national Japanese icon?

 Toki crested ibis
This beautiful white bird decorated with pink feathers almost went extinct in Japan due to overhunting and habitat loss a few decades ago, but with the efforts of many, including the Sado locals, the birds are once again inhabiting Sado Island just off the coast of Niigata Prefecture.

The best place to see this endangered species is at the semi-natural enclosure at Toki Forest Park, where you can observe the birds in their natural habitat.
