MCEC announces reopening under new Roadmap

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is set to reopen from Friday 5 November, with greater capacities than first expected, including up to 5,000 attendees in some spaces. 

Under the updated Phase C of the Victorian Government roadmap, fixed-seated indoor events can soon proceed at 75 per cent capacity to a maximum of 1,000 attendees, while standing and non-fixed -seated indoor events are limited by a 1 person per 4 sqm density requirement (to a maximum of 5,000).  

Outdoor events can proceed with up to 5,000 attendees and a density limit of 1 person per 2 sqm. All attendees and people working on events must be fully vaccinated. 

MCEC will be able to host events at the following capacities, subject to density limits:

Indoor events with standing attendees or non-fixed seating (such as meeting rooms or exhibition spaces). 

No capacity or session limits.

  • All attendees 16 years and over must be fully vaccinated

Under the new arrangements, events coming to the venue this November include the annual Starlight Children’s Foundation fundraising dinner, new immersive digital art gallery THE LUME Melbourne, and the return of in-person end-of-year celebrations for school leavers. 

MCEC Chief Executive, Peter King said he is excited to see the venue welcoming customers and visitors back through the doors. 

“MCEC is recognised as an important contributor to the State of Victoria, and we are proud to have robust COVIDSafe practices in place ensuring we’re ready and able to host events of all sizes safely,” Mr King said. 

“We already have a number of exciting events ready to go, including THE LUME Melbourne, a new immersive digital art gallery and our future is certainly looking bright. I can’t wait to open our doors and get back to what we do best.” 

When Victoria transitions to Phase D at 90 per cent double dose vaccination (anticipated to be 25 November onwards). 

  • The Roadmap indicates that from Phase D, events may proceed with no attendee caps or density limits for the fully vaccinated subject to COVIDSafe measures. 

  • Subject to review and approval of MCEC’s Venue Specific COVIDSafe plan. 

  • Capacity limits may apply depending on level of vaccination at the event. 

Based on Phase C of the current roadmap, all attendees 16 years and above must be fully vaccinatedface coverings are to be worn in line with current Victorian restrictionsmandatory QR code check-in is required and all employees must be compliant with COVID vaccination directions.
