Reece Prior, from the Northern Territory, reeled in a barramundi worth $10,000 at one of the Territory’s most famous fishing hotspots, the Daly River. He caught the lucky barra while land-based fishing with his friend Zenon Theodorou. The two had a pact to split any Million Dollar Fish winnings.
“I’ve just bought a boat, but I’m an avid land-based fisho and I caught this tagged barra fishing from land,” Reece said.
“I was fishing with the mate who actually taught me to fish. Another mate caught a tagged fish in 2018, and I’m pretty stoked I registered for this year’s comp so I could claim my prize.”
Underwritten by SportsBet, Million Dollar Fish sees prize-tagged fish released into Territory waterways, offering anglers the chance to catch $10,000 or even land a million bucks.
Million Dollar Fish is delivered by Northern Territory Major Events Company (NTMEC) on behalf of the Northern Territory Government. NTMEC CEO Tim Watsford said the competition is exclusive to the Territory.
“The Territory is home to some of the most unique experiences in Australia, and Million Dollar Fish is unlike any other fishing competition,” he said.
“Over the seven years of the competition, literally hundreds of thousands of dollars have been paid out to fishos, and we hope this season will be the biggest yet.”
SportsBet External Affairs Manager Brad Fanning said he was keen to see someone snag the Million Dollar Fish.
“There are still 99 $10,000 fish swimming around out there, plus eight chances to land the Million Dollar Fish,” he said.
“Across the course of the competition we have now released a Million Dollar Fish in each of the five fishing regions – Darwin, Kakadu, Katherine, Arnhem Land and Tiwi Islands. This is the greatest fishing comp in Australia, if not the world, and we’re hoping someone will reel in the big one during Season 7.”
For every $10,000 fish caught, an extra $1000 is donated to an official Million Dollar Fish charity, as nominated by the winning fisho. Reece chose the Starlight Children’s Foundation’s Darwin Star Ball.
“On behalf of the Darwin Star Ball Committee and Starlight Children’s Foundation, we thank Reece for this donation,” said charity representative Danielle White.
“After the challenges of the past 18 months, community support is needed now more than ever to help Starlight bring happiness to sick kids in the NT.”
