Rising from Kagoshima Bay, it is hard not to be awed by the smouldering cone of Sakurajima, an active volcano.
Located just offshore from Kagoshima City, people visit this volcano-island to relax with a footbath, most notably on the black sand beach where the water is thermally heated.
There are various observation points to check out spectacular views of the volcano too.
Sakurajima is famous for its mini mandarins and gigantic radishes, and the surrounding sea is ideal for kayaking and other sea sports.
