Kagamibiraki, “opening the mirror” Ceremony

In Japan, January 11 is celebrated with a traditional ceremony called Kagamibiraki, which means “opening the mirror”. 

This ceremony is observed by families breaking apart a mirror, whereby the “mirror” refers to the Kagami mochi, an important New Year delicacy. 

After breaking apart the mochi, it is then cooked in a special soup (zoni) and made as an offering to the gods. 

The humble mochi is considered a sacred food, and its stretchy texture is associated with longevity. 

Hence, the New Year Kagamibiraki represents the beginning of an auspicious new year.
