WORLD TOURISM DAY 2020 CELEBRATION IN CAMBODIA

The Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom of Cambodia, we would like to notify that Cambodia is one of the GMS countries, which has been celebrating the World Tourism Day (WTD) 2020.

The Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom of Cambodia has always celebrated the World Tourism Day every year. Last year, the theme for World Tourism Day was “Tourism and Jobs: A better future for all’. The purpose was to foster awareness among the global community of tourism’s cultural, political and social economic value in creating jobs within the industry and ultimately contributing to the achievement of UNWTO’s Sustainable Development Goals. In many ways and places, tourism employment gives people and communities the path for better future, opportunity and empowerment in wider society.

For the year 2020 is no different, the Ministry of Tourism also celebrated the World Tourism Day on October 3rd, 2020 under the theme of Tourism and Rural Development – is particularly relevant as we face up to an unprecedented crisis in the begining of the 21st century.

Forwarding the message from His Excellency Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nation also mentioned that we must ensure a fair distribution of its benefits and advance the transition to a carbon-neutral and resilient tourism economy, as well as providing opportunities for people, tourism can play an important role in preserving our unique and shared cultures and protecting the biodiversity and the ecosystems that sustain us. In this most challenging year, let us focus on tourism’s importance for people living in rural areas, so we can deliver on the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals to leave nobody behind.

UNWTO’s Secretary General, His Excellency Zurab Pololikashvili addressed that this crisis is an opportunity to rethink the tourism sector and its contribution to the people and planet; an opportunity to build back better towards a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient tourism. Placing rural development at the heart of tourism policies through education, investment, innovation and technology can transform the livelihoods of millions; preserve our environment and our culture.

In addition, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Techo HUN SEN, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia addressed that Cambodia is severely impacted by Covid-19 pandemic, so restarting tourism through the local excursions at the different destinations throughout the country to enhance the public health and safety as the priority, which is an opportunity to recover the economy through encouraging the concerned authorities to consider the tourism as a strategic pillar in the rural development policy that is required the specific tourism development plan in line with the tourism potentials of each destination getting involved with the local communities in the form of 4Ps: Public-Private-People Partnership.
