Australians are set to holiday at home this Christmas, with almost 40% hoping to explore their own backyard over the Christmas holiday period, a landmark new study from INNOCEAN has found.
The INNOCEAN 2020 Life in the Times of Covid tracker reveals overwhelming support for local travel, with most Australians keen to jump in the car and experience their own region this Christmas and new year.
The desire to travel is unsurprising; according to the research - just one in 10 people have been able to get out and discover their surroundings in the past few months, as current COVID-19 restrictions prevent most interstate and overseas travel.
Six in 10 Australians also said it was travel they missed the most, followed by their social life and freedom (50%), since the onset of the global pandemic, and it was the number one opportunity people would seek once COVID-19 was controlled.
INNOCEAN Head of Strategy, Karl Bates said it was no surprise Australians were feeling the need to travel.
“The past six months have been devastating, with COVID-19 transforming the way we live and impacting every facet of life,” he said. “Despite this, the majority of respondents, at 56%, said they felt optimistic about the nation’s future and were itching to hit the road for a break this Christmas.
“We’re gearing up for Australia’s biggest ever staycation season - and with so many regions still reeling from the effects of drought and bushfires, let alone COVID-19, it’s great news for the many tourism, accommodation and hospitality providers who have been doing it tough.”
INNOCEAN conducted two waves of its COVID-19 tracker to understand changing attitudes and behaviours around travel, and to examine how people imagined a COVID-impacted Christmas.
The widespread effects of the pandemic are clearly still being felt, with 70% of respondents stating their lives had been majorly disrupted socially, 50% feeling the impact financially and 35% feeling the psychological impact over the past six months.
Respondents did report some positive effects, however, with many discovering a healthier lifestyle (27%), a sense of resilience (27%), being able to discover themselves (26%) and their family (25%), and an increased sense of resourcefulness (24%).
