Sri Lanka Update on the current situation with regard to COVID-19

Current measures in place to control the further spread of the virus -
There is currently in place an islandwide government police curfew that restricts the movement of the general public. This was lifted in other districts at 5 am on 04th May and reimposed at 8 pm on the same day and will continue on the subsequent days until 06th May except in the Districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara & Puttalam where the curfew has been prolonged until 05 am on Monday the 11th of May. Travel between Districts will remain restricted. However, people will be allowed to travel between districts for employment purposes and provisions of essential services. Schools, Universities, Educational Institutes and cinemas will remain closed until further notice.

Controlled Exit Strategy for Returning to Work -
The government and private institutes in Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, and Puttalam have been permitted to plan to operate from 11th May even if curfew is imposed. Department, Corporations, Boards, etc have been instructed to call only 1/3rd of the staff. In addition, those wishing to leave their homes for essential purposes will only be allowed to do so on certain days of the week, as per the last digit on their National ID cards (NIC).

Global Leadership Response Rank -
Sri Lanka remains completely and fully committing to eradicating COVID – 19 and has already had comparatively good success and positive results through the timely and strict measures enforced starting with the closing of the airport on 19th March. An effective quarantine program, efficient contact tracing and imposing of the curfew along with other stringent and necessary measures are undertaken which have shown very positive results.

The CMA (Certified Management Accountants) Australia in an article released on 14th April titled “GRID Index: Tracking the Global Leadership Response in the COVID-19 Crisis” has ranked Sri Lanka in the No. 9 position together with Hong Kong, UAE, Japan & Taiwan. New Zealand, Singapore & Iceland are ranked 1, 2 & 3 respectively. (https://bit.ly/3eXhdWv )

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) is already working on the implementation of post-COVID-19 measures throughout the country and for the industry starting with hygiene and safety guidelines and certifications for the hotel industry.

Hope in order and we will update you further.
Stay safe and stay at home.
