Excessive encores outlawed?

Imagine writing an opera so successful that the emperor had to outlaw excessive encores, just so the audience could get home every night.

That’s what Mozart did with The Marriage of Figaro, and he did it in just six weeks.

Other composers raved. “I find it absolutely incomprehensible how someone can create something so absolutely perfect,” exclaimed Brahms. Haydn wrote that he heard the opera in his dreams.

You can hear it at the Sydney Opera House next month when we bring our beautiful production back. We’ve assembled a brilliant cast.

The Marriage of Figaro opens 18 October at Sydney Opera House — book now.
