Experience True Autumn Bliss in Miyagi Prefecture With JR East

Japan is famous for its four distinct and breathtaking seasons. Following the end of a scorching summer in late September, autumn reveals its true form as leaves turn vibrant shades of orange, red, yellow, and brown across the country. In Miyagi Prefecture – located on the north-eastern coast above Tokyo – you can visit local art workshops and hot springs while appreciating the stunning hues of Japan's autumn, away from the crowds.

Here are three unique experiences exclusive to Miyagi prefecture with JR East.

Dive into the seasonal colours at Naruko Gorge
With convenient access from Tokyo via the Tohoku Shinkansen and local Riku East Line, Naruko Gorge stretches over 2.5km of land and is 100m deep. Here you can enjoy an incredible view of the Ofukazawa Bridge from the observation deck next to the rest house. The steep stairs by the rest house go all the way down to the bottom of the gorge where you can discover the best view of the coloured leaves from the bottom of the valley. There are also hiking options in the area so why not take the opportunity to explore nature up close!

Experience Japan's Traditional Craft - The Kokeshi Doll!
The Kokeshi Doll is one of Miyagi Prefecture's most iconic figures. These traditional dolls have been carved from wood by artisans in Japan for hundreds of years. It is believed that they originated in the Tohoku area of Japan as souvenirs that people would bring home when they visited the hot springs in the region. The Kokeshi Dolls from each region of Japan have different characteristics, shapes and colours, and the Japan Kokeshi Museum in Miyagi Prefecture is the perfect place to learn about their history and cultural significance. Being the most famous Kokeshi museum in Japan, they hold demonstrations of how they are made, and visitors can even paint their very own Kokeshi doll, making this a fun experience for the whole family! It takes around 20 minute's walk from the JR Naruko Onsen Station.

Relax in the natural hot springs of the Naruko Onsen Village!
Located by the Eai River in northern Miyagi Prefecture, the Naruko Onsen Village has a history of over 1100 years and is nationally known as a hot springs resort with high-quality water that has medicinal benefits for those who bathe in them. The Village is composed of five different hot springs, with almost 400 different water sources. There are 11 types of natural hot spring water in Japan, and Naruko hot springs is well known for having 9 of these water types available in the area. To get here, JR East has the 'Resort Minori' express train that can be taken from JR Sendai Station during weekends and public holidays. Its large windows provide panoramic views of the scenery, such as autumn leaves, rice fields and the beautiful Naruko Gorge as visitors make their way through the countryside.
