72-hour Shopping Itinerary in Melbourne

The Boatbuilders Yard
DAY 1
Coffee and breakfast are worth queuing for in Melbourne, so join a line. Flit between cafes to compare the city's best or get the lowdown on the long-term love affair with coffee and breakfast at Higher Ground.

Start your day bargain hunting at DFO (Direct Factory Outlet) South Wharf. A two-level outlet centre on the Yarra River, DFO has more than 180 retailers including Armani Outlet, Michael Kors, Coach and Kate Spade.

With riverside restaurants, bars and cafes on your doorstep, take the time to enjoy lunch and a refreshing beverage at South Wharf. Make time for local favourites The Boatbuilders Yard and The General Assembly.

Take the 96 tram from Spencer Street to the Bourke Street Mall, in the heart of Melbourne's CBD. Head into Myer, then through to Emporium, the biggest shopping centre in the city centre. A multi-level retail space, Emporium is home to a veritable shopping bag of first-to-Australia brands, sleek and shiny Melbourne flagship stores, and impressive food and wine options.

Post shopping, grab a rooftop drink to go with your shopping show-and-tell. Head to Goldilocks, Madame Brussels or the Rooftop at QT.

DAY 2
Fuel the day's fashion hunt with coffee and breakfast at Queen Victoria Market, the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere. Shop for clothing, jewellery and souvenirs, and of course, fresh produce. Book ahead for the two-hour Ultimate Foodie Tour: meet the stallholders, indulge in tastings and learn about the market's rich history.

Take the City Circle Tram from La Trobe Street and head towards Docklands. Here, discover the neighbourhood's shopping heartland: The District Docklands. Shop Australian and international brands including H&M, General Pants Co., Canterbury and Kathmandu. Beyond the shops, explore seemingly endless options, from bowling and ice skating to immersive art and craft brew tastings.

Next door to The District, discover warehouse-club shopping at Costco, where members can access better-than-retail prices on everything from groceries to clothing, jewellery and electronics.

Shopping marathon complete, take in staggering views from the 120-metre-tall Melbourne Star Observation Wheel – with or without wine in hand.

Federation Square
DAY 3
Take the free fashion shuttle from Federation Square to Chadstone. Australia's largest shopping centre, Chadstone houses more than 550 stores, designer boutiques and luxury brands including Valentino, Louis Vuitton and Prada.

Choose shopping sustenance from more than 85 eateries, and round out your Chadstone experience in luxury cinemas. Junior shoppers in tow? Don't miss the LegoLand Discovery Centre.

After your day of shopping, take the free shuttle bus back to Federation Square and enjoy a well-deserved beverage at Riverland Bar or Pilgram Bar, both in prime position on the banks of the Yarra River, below Federation Square.
