Hydrangeas in Japan

Hydrangeas are believed by many Japanese to have originated in Japan and they have long been a symbol of the rainy season, which is when they are in full bloom.

The flower's Japanese name, "Ajisai", means a "gathering of blues". 

If you're looking for the largest hydrangea-related event in summer, the Hydrangea Festival held on Hakkeijima Island in Yokohama from 8 to 30 June is probably the best spot. 

It only takes a 30-minute train ride from Yokohama Station to the island filled with 20,000 flowers in full bloom, turning it blue, pink, purple and white. It's the perfect start to your summer trip!
