1. Newcastle Museum
It's not your usual museum, Newcastle Museum is a kid's wonderland! They can easily spend hours here in the Supernova and Mininova permanent exhibits. Supernova is a hands-on science centre perfect for not only entertaining but educating the kids on the wonders of science. Here they can make their own tornado, play in a magnetic field and even lift a car! Whilst Mininova is soft play area for the little ones, where they can solve problems, climb a mountain and play in the tunnels.
2. Go for a swim at the Canoe Pool
Nestled between Newcastle Beach and Newcastle Ocean Baths, the Canoe Pool is perfect for the kids. There's no breaking waves, it's not very deep and there is heaps of sand to build sandcastles in!
3. Take the dog for a walk in King Edward Park
Enjoy the off-leash area of King Edward Park with the pooch, or head down the play equipment near the rotunda.
4. Walk (and/or scooter) from Merewether Beach to Bar Beach along John Parade and Bathers Way
Start by grabbing a coffee from Blue Door or Merewether Surfhouse then head north along John Parade taking in the sights of Merewether Beach, Dixon Park, then up over the hill to Bar Beach. This shared pathway is wide, mostly flat and perfect for kids on scooters, bicycles, prams and the family dog. For those keen to take on Memorial Drive, it's worth it, with the scenic ANZAC Bridge Walk offering some of Newcastle's most spectacular views.
5. Discover Blackbutt Reserve
Just 10 minutes from the city, Blackbutt Reserve in New Lambton is the perfect way to entertain the kids. Boasting over 180 hectares of native bushland with walking trails, wildlife exhibits, kids play equipment and picnic grounds.
6. Experience the Newcastle Farmers Markets at the Showground every Sunday
The Newcastle Farmers Market is a full sensory experience where the kids will get to meet local farmers and artisans, taste different produce, listen to live music and learn about food.
7. Treetops Adventure Park, Minmi
Fly between the treetops on zip lines as you move from tree to tree, all whilst 20 metres above the ground. With 20 different flying foxes, suspension bridges and heaps of other activities, Treetops Adventure Park will challenge your sense of adventure and upper body strength!
8. Catch the ferry to Stockton and back
Jump onboard the Stockton ferry for a trip across the harbour. Take in the sights of Newcastle including the working harbour, the berths on Carrington and the city scape on your return.
9. Order a delicious gelato
"I don't like icecream" said no kid ever! Newcastle now has a long list of gelato and ice creamery's for you to choose from. From the Kiwi Waffle Cone's near Newcastle Beach, Monella Gelato Bar on Darby Street and Popolo Gelato in King Street. It's delicious and a winner with the kids.
10. Head to the skate park at Newcastle Beach
Grab a coffee from Estabar or Newcastle Beach Kiosk then wander along to the South Newcastle Beach Skate Park. A great little spot for scooter riders, whilst the adjacent beach can keep the rest of the family entertained discovering the rockpools.
