ECC PURCHASES ELEPHANTS TO KEEP THEM IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT, FOREVER

Mae Kham Peng Elephant
If we want to breed, socialize and then release elephants into the wild for the conservation of the species, we have to buy the elephants.

As you may know, as soon as our costs are covered, all the profits go straight to our conservation projects. This year, we were happy to rescue two new female elephants from a tourist camp in Luang Prabang: Mae Kham Peng and Mae Thong Bay. When they arrived at the Center, they were in poor physical condition: they had endured a bad diet and weren't given enough food. They had high blood sugar level and stomach worms. Mae Thong Bay had injuries on the forehead probably due
 to an overzealous mahout.

We started treating them and after their recovery, they integrated our socialization and breeding programs. Although Mae Kham Peng can still have babies, she is partially blind. Therefore she needs to stay near her friend Mae Thong Bay at all times to avoid stress. They both stay together at the socialization area where they have been interacting a lot with juveniles. Mae Kham Peng also spent some time with a male, so we'll know in February 2019 if she's pregnant.
