The temperatures have dropped and winter has well and truly arrived. There is no better place than Canterbury when it comes to our country's coldest season: snow-capped mountains, squeaky snow and frosty clear winter mornings –pure winter magic!

Winter is best experienced outdoors so we've been on a mission to find the best places to explore Jack Frost's playground: from the beautiful Mackenzie region to the Craigieburn Haute Route which combines stunning scenery and backcountry skiing with good ol' Kiwi hospitality.

Winter is also the time of Matariki – Māori New Year. Matariki will be celebrated all around the city with different events, including a spectacular firework display at the Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights.
