The temperatures have dropped and winter has well and truly arrived. There is no better place than Canterbury when it comes to our country's coldest season: snow-capped mountains, squeaky snow and frosty clear winter mornings –pure winter magic!
Winter is best experienced outdoors so we've been on a mission to find the best places to explore Jack Frost's playground: from the beautiful Mackenzie region to the Craigieburn Haute Route which combines stunning scenery and backcountry skiing with good ol' Kiwi hospitality.
After having spent the day outside how about sitting in front of a cosy fireplace with a glass of mulled wine or soaking in hot pools under a starry winter sky? Whatever you are in the mood for, we've got your covered with the best après ski experiences.
Winter is also the time of Matariki – Māori New Year. Matariki will be celebrated all around the city with different events, including a spectacular firework display at the Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights.
