The Australian National Maritime Museum recently hosted a very special famil for Vietnamese agents from Cockatoo Adventures to strengthen the Museum's relationship with the Vietnamese community and increase visitation from Vietnam. The opportunity was generated via the Museum's tourism representation agency, Australian Attractions.
The group spent the day exploring the exact replica of Cook's famous HMAS Endeavour, HMAS Vampire, HMAS Onslow, the Vietnamese TO DO vessel and the recently launched $12 million dynamic attraction Action Stations. They also enjoyed lunch at the Museum's stunning waterside café, Yots, ideal for the families and young children in the group.
In the midst of all the action, it was clear that the highlight for the group was the visit to the Museum's TO DO vessel (pictured above).
While visiting TO DO, Vietnamese agent Mr Danko from Cockatoo Adventures told the group the incredible story of how he came to Australia at the young age of 5, in a refugee boat just like TO DO.
Mr Danko was thrilled to be able to show his family and friends the vessel and share his memories from his long voyage to settle in Australia.
The Museum's ship keeper Dominique Anderson speaks fluent Vietnamese and acted as guide for the group. The group was very surprised to learn from Dominique the tale of her own arrival in Australia on a refugee boat, not dissimilar to TO DO.
The combination of the rich maritime history of the vessels and the new Action Stations attraction, the stunning Darling Harbour backdrop and the sharing of personal stories made for an unforgettable experience for the Museum's Vietnamese visitors.
