Queensland - New Tourism April 2016

Coast Capers
There's a fresh season a-brewing here in Queensland, with a new Great Barrier Reef Beer and a rejigged Rum Distillery on the boil. Meanwhile, get back to nature with innovative tours at Cobbold Gorge or premium accommodation at Gwinganna and get your mind and spirit back into gear.

Cruising the Coast in a Kombi

Kombis and surfing culture are one helluva match made in heaven, which is why the guys behind Coast Capers have combined the two, to show off the Gold Coast's 57-kilometers of coastline, in the ultimate half-day surf-history tour.

Whether you are mad about Mick, go silly for Steph, or don't know your hang tens from twos – Coast Capers will get you up to speed as you cruise the length of the 'Goldy', travelling from the northern breaks of Surfers Paradise to the southern swells of Duranbah.

A few hours of secret breaks and Surf World Museums and you'll be well-versed on the history of Australia's favourite surfing playground.

A Tropical Brewski

There's more than one way to skin-the-reef cat and get a taste of the tropics when you crack a coldie (beer) from Barrier Reef Brewing in Cairns.

Their three brews: Two Turtles Pale Ale, Arlington Amber and the Barrier Reef Kolshe, pack summery zest into glass bottles, with names that give a nod to their tropical origins.

And, it's a brew with a "turtle-y good conscience – sick and injured turtles are treated and nourished thanks to donations from the proceeds. We'll drink to that!

Reef Goddess by Name and Nature

Say goodbye to day-long cruises to the reef, crowded boats and floating pontoons. Mission Beach Dive now operates day trips, dive charters, snorkel safaris and learn-to-dive classes from their Mission Beach base, the closest patch of dry-land to the outer Great Barrier Reef in Queensland.

At just one hour out and one hour back, marine lovers will spend more time on the reef than they do getting there, leaving plenty of time to suit and fin up at two dive locations on the all-day tours.

It's not all swimming; between the dives, enjoy a Captain's BBQ lunch with fresh prawns and bar service from the deck of the 65 foot MV Goddess Westcoaster.

Koalaity New Villas

Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat is paying homage to its surroundings to celebrate their 10th anniversary on the lush Gold Coast Hinterland by opening two new Boorabee Villas (meaning 'koala' in the traditional indigenous language.)

Guests can tap into their inner koala and chill out in the new villas tucked away on the mountain in the midst of native vegetation, or plunge in private pool and make - and bake - like a frilled-neck lizard on the secluded relaxation deck.

Seeking more zen? Try one of Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat's three new Meditation Suites and escape and reconnect in zen dens custom designed to focus on mindfulness and minimal distractions. #Namaste

Beenleigh Rum Distillery

There's a reason why Queenslanders drink nearly twice as much rum as the average Aussie. Now visitors can find out why at the Beenleigh Rum Distillery's brand new Visitor Centre.

More than 200,000 visitors a year are expected to explore the $5m addition to the city of Logan's tourism, located half way between Brisbane and Gold Coast, and discover the secret to an old-world craft brew.

Soak in the history of this iconic distillery, inhale the aroma of aged rum in the barrel hall, and finish with the hard stuff - a sample of hand-crafted rum or vodka in a VIP tasting room.
