Bethells Beach, or Te Henga, lies in the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park on the wild West Coast, 45 kilometres west of the Auckland CBD. It is part of Auckland Council’s network of parks and beaches preserved for their natural beauty.
“I am delighted an international star of Taylor Swift’s standing loves our beaches as much as we do,” says Auckland Mayor Len Brown.
“Our regional and local parks are much loved and treasured by the people of Auckland and visitors alike, receiving more than 6 million visits a year.
“The Waitakere Ranges and west coast beaches represent the iconic landscapes of the Auckland region and are home to many rare and threatened ecosystems and native species. For many of us, they are places that inspire and define us; places where we seek tranquillity and respite in nature, or more active recreation in the bush or on the beach.”
Te Henga Bethells Beach is the starting point for a number of short walks that take visitors through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.
The beach has attracted visitors for generations. Early Māori were drawn to the area’s rich resources of seafood, berries and birds and grew gourds, kumara and taro. Shell middens, terraces, pits and pā (fortifications) can still be seen.
