Gosen has been known from times past as a silk textiles region which saw a national expansion in its knit products following World War 2. Gosen’s scenic beauty, lush green mountains and pure waters have given birth to sub local specialties as peonies which are second to none in Japan, tulips chestnuts, ginko, taro and carp farms.

Muramatsu Park is one of 100 nationally selected cherry viewing sites, including the Oyamada Higan cherry, which has been designated as a national natural monument. After its introduction to Japan during the 19th century, tulip cultivation took off in Niigata, where rice farmers planted it in paddy fields during the off-season. In its early days the tulip was a luxury flower only available to the elite, but soon became popular in gardens, pots, and bouquets of every social class.
Gosen City in Niigata celebrates its heritage as Japan’s first and #1 tulip supplier with a month long tulip festival. Visitors can enjoy over 300 varieties and over 65,000 square meters of this cheery flower from mid-April to May.
The tulip is the prefectural flower, as Niigata produces the most nationwide. This festival takes place in conjunction with the spring bloom.
