CHUR Burger for the best burgers

Warren Turnbull is a master chef, a New Zealander, and a lover of burgers. His CHUR Burger is the place to go to find his gourmet burger creations.

I recently ventured into Surry Hills, the food haven inner city suburb of Sydney, to discover the CHUR Burger. It is a a sort of cross between a restaurant, a cafe, and a burger joint.

Its popularity means that it is often crowded, but that is parer of the secret to its popularity.

Once through the door I was struck by its modern industrial-art vibe of drums, benches, lighting, murals and tiling on the walls. (I have hard the place really jumps in the evenings when the music is turned up and the lighting mood effects take place.)

The staff welcomed me into a cool and laid back atmosphere that I found to be warm and inviting on the particular bleak day I went.

My order was placed just in the front door at the bar counter. (Yes, they are a licensed premise and do serve alcohol). I found the service by the waiters to be fast, efficient and friendly. The chefs and kitchen hands in the open kitchen worked well as a team and manoeuvred around each other in the small area without bumming into each other.

I sampled some of the other offerings before getting to my burger. First off I had a serving of delicious sweet corn cobs, cooked to perfection. Then I had some KFC - Korean fried chicken wings that came with toasted sesame seeds. I will have to try the Chips with chilli salt and Sweet potato fries with garlic and lime another time.

The informal nature of CHUR Burger meant that I did not feel out of place using my fingers to eat the corn cobs and chicken wings. Both the corn and the chicken wings came with special sauces, so I was glad that paper towelling was available to wipe up my drips. It was good to see that free water was brought to my table to accompany my meal.

For my burger I chose the beef option. This was a mouth-watering combination of a thick grilled beef patty, melted cheese, tomato jam, mustard mayonnaise and pickle served on a golden, sparsely sesame-topped, toasted fluffy brioche bun. It was the best burger that I have the fortune to taste, and makes the burgers served up at the fast food burger chains pale to insignificance.

I will have to venture back to CHUR Buger in the coming weeks to try the other burgers they serve, including Marinated grilled chicken, hot sauce mayo, minted slaw; Spiced chickpea fritter, grated beetroot, honey lane; Pulled pork, CHUR BBQ sauce, red slaw, fennel mayo; Grilled lamb, mint sauce, feta, red onion, aioli and Crumbed fish fillet, pickled cucumber, lemon mayo, dill.

CHUR Burger offer a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. I opted for one of their milkshakes - the flavoursome Salted Caramel. I could really taste the caramel in what could best be described as a thick shake. I hear that their other flavours of Vanilla, Milo and Strawberry are just as good.

It aways intrigues me where the names of restaurants come from. I discovered that Chur is a word hailing from New Zealand meaning awesome or excellent. So it is a fitting name for the CHUR Burger restaurant - their burgers are awesome!

If you are wanting to go somewhere that has a relaxed cool vibe, where the service is quick and cheerful, and offers a good selection of delicious burgers at a low prices, then head to CHUR Buger in Surry Hills or one of its other locations. You will not be disappointed.
