City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Peter Cox said it has been exciting to watch the $25.8 million project come to fruition.
“It’s simply an amazing example of how to adapt and re-use a heritage asset which we hope will inspire other communities around the world. By incorporating the old Bendigo Gaol into a new state-of-the art theatre complex we have led the way and we look forward to it becoming a unique showpiece for others to aspire to,” said Cr Cox.
He said the best projects are always those that are undertaken as a collective.
“Ulumbarra has been a wonderful partnership between all levels of government that has resulted in a community asset that will provide ongoing social, educational, and economic benefits for the wider community. It’s a smart collaboration and a great investment in our region and I thank and congratulate both the Federal and State Governments for supporting this project.
“I also thank the more than 300 local businesses, organisations and individuals who have made generous financial contributions through the Ulumbarra Theatre Dreaming Program designed to raise funds for the purchase of specialist equipment and musical instruments and the delivery of innovative programming. We are just so grateful and thank them for supporting this important cultural asset for our region,” Cr Cox said.
“Greater Bendigo is one of Victoria’s fastest growing regional areas and it’s important to provide sporting, recreational and cultural facilities that cater for this growth to ensure our city continues to be a great place to live and visit.
“Ulumbarra Theatre features a 1,000 seat, two-tier theatre complete with a large stage, fly tower and dressing rooms along with music, dance and drama studio spaces, general learning areas and commercial learning kitchens.
“The theatre's seating capacity and production capability is already attracting major national and international performing artists and touring companies.
“It’s proving a huge drawcard and has already attracted a diverse number of shows and major events including the Bendigo Bank’s 2015 National conference, National Gymnastics Club Championships, Calesthenics Victorian State Championship and Country Women’s Association of Victoria State Conference.
“These events alone will bring thousands of people to Bendigo and will provide significant economic benefits for our local economy. While Bendigo has always been a popular destination for conferences and events it is now even more desirable and accomodating.
“I look forward to Ulumbarra delivering a program of substantial and meaningful performing arts for the wider community and attracting major conferences and events that benefit the economy of the central Victorian region,” said Cr Cox.
The $25.8 M project has been funded by a $12.3M contribution from the Australian Government; $7.5M from the Victorian Government’s Department of Education and Training; $3M from City of Greater Bendigo; and $3M from the Victorian Government’s Regional Development Victoria.
