Chinese New Year – Sunday in Chinatown Melbourne

A Chinese dragon, lions, street performers and cultural activity will fill the streets of Chinatown in Melbourne on Chinese New Year Sunday.

The Chinese Masonic Society and Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne's lion dance teams will start the day with a cacophony of rhythmic drumming and fire crackers outside Chinese businesses, to ensure evil spirits are scared away to allow prosperity to follow in the coming year.

Add street performers and traditional crafts people from overseas, Asian food stalls, waiters' races open to all-comers, and cultural activities in the streets and laneways, and the area will be buzzing with excitement!

The Chinese Museum will have a free open day from 11am to 5pm to view the museum's exhibition and activities.

Main stage performances will take place into the evening, starting with the Popasia live show from 6pm to 8pm.

These events are brought to you by City of Melbourne, Victorian Multicultural Commission, AXF Group, ANZ Bank, Rydges Melbourne, Quest on Bourke, Central Equity, Channel Seven and SBS Radio.
