Spicers Tamarind Hosts Sculptures on the Edge

This September, Spicers Retreats is celebrating the fifth annual Arts Connect Inc Sculptures On The Edge event at Spicers Tamarind with the launch of the inaugural Spicers Sculpture Award.

From 9 September - 29 October, against a backdrop rolling hills, rainforest and the beautiful Gardners Falls in Maleny, eighteen sculptors from across South East Queensland will work with clay, wood, metal, stone and found objects to create spectacular sculptures for the event.

This year, Arts Connect Inc. is also proud to launch the inaugural Spicers Sculpture Award with $5000 awarded to the Judges Choice and presented to the winner on 24 September 2014.

Arts Connect Inc. is a membership driven organisation based in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and the Sculptures On The Edge event is an example of the organisations focus on encouraging excellence within local arts practices through shared activities, workshops, collaboration and mentoring

This year's event also includes an exciting week of interactive activities thanks to extra funding from the Regional Arts Development Fund. Prominent local artist Corrie Wright will lead a group of four talented artists (who specialise in ephemeral or temporary art installations) in creating 'green' artwork on site at Spicers Tamarind from 25 September – 2 October.

Inspired by the surrounding environment, these works of 'green art' will incorporate the artist's response to the Spicers Tamarind site as part of the process of creating their work. This offers visitors a glimpse into the creative process, inviting them to engage in the relationship between place and process.

Guest judge and co-founder of Spicers Retreats Jude Turner is proud to be a part of the vibrant Queensland arts scene, commenting: “The natural beauty of South East Queensland is a huge inspiration for many of these artists with the entries from previous years being a true reflection of this place. It is a privilege to host this event at Spicers Tamarind and be part of the local arts and culture community; I look forward to seeing what is presented this year!”

Sculptures On The Edge is a Queensland Government, Arts Queensland and Sunshine Coast Council partnership to support local arts and culture. Judging will take place on 11 September and the public is encouraged to register their votes for the People's Choice Award before 19 October (a voting box is available at Spicers Tamarind office).
