The Beatles and Neil Diamond are set to perform at the 2014 Alice Springs Masters Games. Well, sort of.
“Two of the best known acts in the world, the Beatles and Neil Diamond have a string of hit songs between them,” said Minister for Central Australia Matt Conlan.
“Obviously it’s impossible to pull the original Beatles line up together and Neil Diamond is currently not touring so we have booked the next best thing!
“World renowned Beatles tribute band, Beatnix, will see athletes from around Australia ‘come together’ and ‘twist and shout’ at the Games Opening Ceremony on Saturday 11 October.
“While at the Closing Ceremony, Neil Diamond tribute show, Forever Diamond, led by Peter Bryne will perform, ensuring the Games end on a great high.”
Mr Conlan said the Opening Ceremony would be a musical extravaganza with Beatnix to support headline act, rock icons Dragon, as well as cover band Clearway playing hits from the 70s to 90s.
“This year’s Masters Games Opening Ceremony is set to be one huge party with Alice Springs to be rocking all night long,” he said.
“There’ll be six hours of non-stop hits so I hope everyone packs their dancing shoes.
“The night will be a feast of Beatles classics while I have no doubt Dragon will get the crowd roaring with their rock anthems April Sun in Cuba, Are You Old Enough and Rain led by Todd Hunter, the brother of original front man Marc Hunter. And with Clearway to keep everyone entertained with crowd favourites across the decades, there’ll be something for everyone.”
Popular Aussie rockers of the 1990s Chocolate Starfish will also perform at the Closing Ceremony.
The band, led by Adam Thompson, will sing hits including You’re So Vain, Mountain and All Over Me with cover band The Cast also set to perform on the night.
“With so much top-quality entertainment to look forward to, I have no doubt the 2014 Masters Games will uphold its reputation as a great social event,” said Mr Conlan.
“I encourage all Territorians to be part of the Games and enter now.”
