Brisbane's Hotel Resurgence to Generate 600 New Rooms by G20

Brisbane will welcome five new hotels and almost 600 new hotel rooms by the time world leaders arrive for the G20 Leaders Summit in November.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the resurgence in new hotels followed Brisbane City Council's three year moratorium on hotel infrastructure charges for new four and five star hotels, effective from July 2011 where construction commences within two years of approval.

“Brisbane is evolving into a destination of choice for visitors and events and I want to ensure we can continue to accommodate these events,” Cr Quirk said.

Brisbane Marketing CEO John Aitken said the city's growth in international and domestic leisure visitors in 2013 demonstrated the profile and popularity of Brisbane as a holiday destination were on the rise.

“The new hotels help the city become a world-class destination with accommodation that will appeal to both business and leisure travellers,” Mr Aitken said.

The new Four Points by Sheraton led the charge with the development of a 33-storey, 246-room skyscraper which opened in March and was the first new major hotel in the CBD in 16 years.

Opened in May, Gambaro Hotel offers 68 rooms on Caxton St, with both Suncorp Stadium and Brisbane's CBD within close proximity.

SilverNeedle Hospitality is refurbishing and extending Brisbane's Chifley Hotel, converting it from a 150-room hotel to the 304-room NEXT Hotel, due to open this spring.

In Fortitude Valley, The Wyndham Hotel Group will operate TRYP Hotel, whichwill add a further 65 rooms to supply, and another 48 rooms will be available at Alpha Mosaic Brisbane when it opens towards the middle of the year.

The growth highlights the success of Brisbane Marketing's hotel investment program, which was developed after research found Brisbane was missing out on 121,000 visitors and $140 million in visitor expenditure a year due to a lack of available hotel rooms.
