One-year-old Pig-nosed Turtle and Aquarist Martin Garwood’s Share Birthday at Sealife Aquarium

It’s a very happy birthday at SeaLife Sydney Aquarium for both creature and carer celebrating their special day.

In honour of the one-year-old Pig-nosed Turtle ‘Punk’ and aquarist Martin Garwood’s birthday, Garwood made a bespoke birthday cake out of Punk’s favourite treat, fresh fruit. The aquarium’s newest resident is affectionately called Punk by Garwood and staff because of the Mohawk-like ridge on the back of the turtle’s shell.

Garwood shares more than just his birthday with Punk the Pig-nosed Turtle; as an aquarist for the aquarium’s Mangrove Swamps, Garwood cares for all of the animals on display in this zone including Punk.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate my birthday with Punk our Pig-nosed Turtle and for good reason,” said Martin Garwood, aquarist for SeaLife Sydney Aquarium. “Not only is he a fun animal to care for at the aquarium but Punk is also a great conservation ambassador for his species which is currently vulnerable to extinction in the wild.”

Punk joins SeaLife Sydney Aquarium’s collection of more than 13,000 undersea creatures on display. Visitors to the aquarium can see the one-year-old Pig-nosed Turtle, along with frogs, crustaceans and a vast variety of fish, in the Mangrove Swamps area which replicates Australia's tropical north.
