Sporting Stars Turn Out For The Great Australian Swim

A stellar line up of Australian sporting stars will join over 1,000 swimmers during the Final of the Body Science Great Swim Series at Farm Cove as part of the official Australia Day celebrations.

Dual Olympian and former Ironman champion Ky Hurst said he is excited by the level of support he has received from his fellow athletes and sporting celebrities and is looking forward to welcoming them to the event.

Multiple Gold Medallist Grant Hackett, Ironwoman Candice Falzon and Ironman Kendrick Louis, along with a host of elite swimmers, will be taking the plunge with the little ones in the Junior Kids 300m Swim. Australian Cricketer David Warner will officially start the race.

Later in the morning television celebrity Michelle Bridges will get the Ky Hurst 750m swims underway on behalf of the Swim Series charity beneficiary, Black Dog Institute.

"Exercising should be part of all our daily routines - just like cleaning our teeth. The Great Australian Swim Series is a brilliant opportunity to have fun while exercising and I am proud and excited to have been asked to fire the start gun,” said Ms Bridges.

Competitors will also compete in the P&O Cruises 2.2km swim around Farm Cove. Kicking off at 7.00am, the Sydney Swim will cap a spectacular four race ocean swim series, held at Australia’s most iconic and beautiful beaches along the East Coast of Australia between May 2013 and Australia Day January 26.

As well as providing one of the best vantage spots for the swim, The Royal Botanic Gardens will host plenty of Australia Day action for those staying on land, including a marketplace, photo booths, face-painting stalls, massages, giveaways and much more.

The Body Science Great Australian Swim Series Final is a key lifestyle event on the 2014 NSW Events Calendar and is an official Australia Day activity on Sydney Harbour.

The NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, is proud to support the 2014 Great Sydney Swim.
