MINISTER CONGRATULATES HELPMANN AWARDS WINNERS

NSW Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Arts, George Souris, has congratulated the winners of the 2013 Helpmann Awards held on Monday at the Sydney Opera House.

“I congratulate all of the award winners on their fabulous achievements in the live performance industry this year,” Mr Souris said.

Mr Souris, who presented the award for 'Best New Australian Work' to Sydney Theatre Company production The Secret River’ (written by Kate Grenville and adapted for the stage by Andrew Bovell), said that NSW continues to secure market share ahead of other states in terms of revenue and attendance for live performance in Australia.

“The Helpmanns are the premier awards for the live performance industry in Australia. Our investment in the 2013 Helpmann Awards and the staging of them in Sydney re-affirms the NSW Government’s commitment to the arts and further strengthens Sydney’s position as the live performance capital of Australia.” Mr Souris said.

“According to the Live Performance Australia’s Ticket Attendance and Revenue Survey released today, NSW continues to enjoy a healthy position for live performance revenue and attendance in Australia last year, ahead of all other states.

"The Helpmann Awards are the pinnacle event for Australia's live performance industry, recognising the very best in live performances. It is only fitting that Sydney is the host city.”

"NSW won 22 Awards at the Helpmann Awards ceremony, Victoria 10 and Queensland four," Mr Souris said.

Now in its 13th year, the Helpmann Awards Ceremony was held live in Sydney at the Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House, in a glittering event hosted by Eddie Perfect and Christie Whelan Browne.

The NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, is a strategic partner for the 2013 Helpmann Awards.
