Various venues around the city of Cairns, in Tropical North Queensland Australia, are used for the various events, activities and performances of the Cairns Festival 2012. One of the key venues is the Cairns Civic Centre. This is the city’s
most well-known and established entertainment venue, and is situated on the corner of Grafton and Florence streets. The Theatre was built at a cost of $1.1 million and opened in May 19784 by the Prime Minister of the day, Gough Whitlam. At the time Cairns had a population if 33,999. Cairns can take pride innthe fact that the theatre was the first purpose-built theater in regional Queensland.
Each year the Theatre delivers a culturally diverse and high quality program of music, dance, theatre, comedy and cultural entertainment as well as providing the stage for the annual Eisteddfod and performances by schools and organisations. For further information see the web site

Winner of Sydney International Piano Competition
The Sydney International Piano Competition takes place every
4 years and takes 18 days of competition to determine a winner. A total of 36
competitors were selected through auditions in Singapore,
Rome, Vienna, Hamburg, Paris, Moscow, London, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Shanghai and Sydney. We are bringing
the winner of this prestigious competition to you to perform live at the Cairns
Civic Theatre as part of the 2012 Cairns Festival.
The Big Laugh
The Cairns Civic Theatre and The Sit Down Comedy Club
presents The BIG Laugh at Cairns Festival, a comedy gala created especially as
a highlight for Cairns Festival, 2012. All 5 guest comedians have featured on
popular radio and TV shows as well a films and mini-series and collectively
have 9 international tours between them. It’s 1 show only for Cairns Festival
audiences, so get your tickets before they sell out!
Cairns State High School Extravaganza
The show will feature a selection of the very best of the
best from the award winning Performing Arts Department of Cairns State High
School. The CSHS Orchestra, Stage Band, Concert Band, String Ensembles and
Vocal Ensembles will be featured throughout the night.
Cairns Underwater Film Festival
The event will showcase winners from the World Festival of
Underwater Films in Marseille, France, North Queensland
underwater photographers and filmmakers and winners of the 2012 Cairns
Underwater Film Festival photo competition. Drinks and displays from 6.30pm.
