Emerging Tech Inspires a New Wave of Premieres in San Francisco This Year

Francisco's cultural heart beats just a few blocks from 'Cerebral Valley,' a nickname coined last year for the Hayes Valley neighborhood following an influx of Artificial Intelligence (AI) start-up activity. Civic Center is home to the city's most established performing arts institutions—America's oldest professional ballet company, San Francisco Ballet, the 101-year-old San Francisco Opera, and the 112-year-old San Francisco Symphony.

A tech revolution unfolding outside the doorsteps of stately performing arts institutions may seem incongruent, but this is San Francisco, where innovation is the ethos. Artistic visionaries at those institutions, along with cultural leaders, curators, and artists throughout San Francisco, are at the forefront of leveraging AI and other technologies to push creative boundaries, forge new works, and enhance the audience experience. Often while exploring the profound implications of new technology.

As San Francisco Symphony Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen explained it, “We're in San Francisco, the hotbed of invention and imagination…The Symphony is over 100 years old, lots of inventions that shape our everyday lives are made here. We're trying to combine those things.”

Premiering this winter and spring in San Francisco are a number of performances and exhibits incorporating technology or addressing its implications. Here are a few highlights.

Mere Mortals

When San Francisco-based OpenAI gave ChatGPT to the world in late 2022 and ushered in the modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution, was Pandora's box opened? The ethically complicated discovery and proliferation of AI was the inspiration for San Francisco Ballet's world-premiere commission, Mere Mortals, an immersive reimagining of the Pandora and Prometheus myths.

“Artificial intelligence continues to grow and evolve, and Mere Mortals will tackle the complicated issues and feelings as well as the exciting creative promise that this new technology holds,” said Tamara Rojo, SF Ballet's new artistic director. This is the first season programmed by Rojo.

The groundbreaking Mere Mortals viscerally explores the risks and opportunities of technological progress. Audience members can expect to be confronted with questions surrounding love, change, human connection, societal advancement, and more in the immersive experience.

 Mere Mortals
Marking many 'firsts' for the company, including SF Ballet's first full-length commission from a female choreographer (Aszure Barton), Mere Mortals has been brought to life by an international collective of artists across disciplines. Performed by a 43-member cast, Mere Mortals pushes new boundaries in ballet with gender-neutral principal pairing, AI-influenced stage design, and live mixing of electronic and classical instrumentation. The work marks the first-ever composition of a ballet score by Floating Points (a.k.a Sam Shepherd), an accomplished U.K.-based artist, composer, and producer who creates transportive sonic environments. He will be performing alongside the SF Ballet Orchestra on the Buchla, a synthesizer created in the Bay Area in 1963, which will interpret and loop the orchestra's instrumentation live each night. An after-party follows each evening's 75-minute performance. (Mere Mortals premieres on Jan. 26. Performances are scheduled through Feb. 1 at the War Memorial Opera House.)

Prometheus, The Poem of Fire and Press Play: Carol Reiley and the Robots

Myth also takes the stage at the San Francisco Symphony, which premieres a multisensory performance of Alexander Scriabin's Prometheus, The Poem of Fire on March 1. Devised by SF Symphony Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Cartier in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurent, the dynamic musical and light performance and olfactory curation aim to realize Scriabin's unrealized vision of a genuinely synesthetic work.

"Scriabin scored Prometheus for light and color as well as music, but one of his dreams was to add more senses to the score, including scent. This idea has always fascinated me, as somebody who has always loved working together with artists from a variety of disciplines," said Thibaudet. "I am excited that we now have the technology to bring Scriabin's dream to life, and to be a part of this project with Esa-Pekka and Mathilde. This project shows us what is possible when there is collaboration within the arts: how different art forms and different senses can enrich one another, and in doing so enrich our lives and our experiences both inside and outside of the concert hall.” (March 1-3 at Davies Symphony Hall.)

In April, SF Symphony collaborative partner and roboticist Carol Reiley is curating a first-of-its-kind, human-machine interactive SoundBox program showcasing various Artificial Intelligence (AI) uses. Press Play: Carol Reiley and the Robots is designed as a fun, human-centered experience with audience participation. SF Symphony's experimental live music SoundBox series is a laboratory for the exploration of new musical ideas and immersive audience experiences that continuously push the envelope with adventurous programming and innovative design. (April 5 and 6 in SF Symphony's 7,600-square-foot warehouse-like rehearsal space adjacent to Davies Symphony Hall.)

Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco teamed up with Snap Inc. to debut an interactive augmented reality installation at the de Young for its new major exhibition, Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style, which opened on Jan. 20. The de Young is the first museum in the U.S. to feature Snap's AR Mirrors, which let visitors “try on” three couture ensembles featured in the exhibit by the late French designer Yves Saint Lauren, Italian designer Valentino, and Chinese-American Bay Area-based designer Kaisik Wong.

Fashioning San Francisco presents the work of more than 50 fashion designers, from Balmain to Miyake, Valentino to McQueen, with the majority of the over 90 ensembles on view for the first time. The exhibit chronicles how style in the Bay Area has evolved over generations and its role as a marker of social identity. Spanning a century of high fashion and haute couture worn by Bay Area women, fashions range from bohemian styles and power suits to LBDs (Little Black Dresses) and elegant evening wear.

The Fine Arts Museums are home to one of the most significant holdings of 20th and 21st-century high fashion and haute couture in the U.S. San Franciscans have a long-standing history of being among the first to embrace the experimental in dress, both supporting and wearing designers with a knack for the radical. Japanese designers such as Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake, Junya Watanabe, and Yohji Yamamoto are featured in a section that explores the avant-garde creatives who redefined conventional fashion. Fashioning San Francisco also explores the work of Western designers inspired by the aesthetics of Asian, African, and other international cultures to address cultural appropriation and its contemporary discourse. (On view at the de Young through Aug. 11.)

Mr. Roboto

Not far from the Museum of Craft and Design, guests of Mission Bay's LUMA Hotel San Francisco can receive their morning coffee delivery from new OG robotic team members Lumie and Lucy. The robotic duo is fitted with custom 3D-printed inserts that enable them to carry hot beverages ordered via QR code from guestrooms. But one day will these robots become collaborators? The Museum of Craft and Design's upcoming exhibition, Mr. Roboto, tests creative possibilities through a new showcase of design activities and experiments.

“The work in Mr. Roboto expands the customary role of the robot… by inviting the robot to be a collaborator, not just an executor of repetitive or dangerous tasks, we create possibilities, discover ways of making, develop design innovation, experiment with materials, and forge a future that we could not build alone,” said Virginia San Fratello, who guest curated the exhibition along with Eleanor Pries.

Featuring experiments conducted by approximately 60 San José State University students, the exhibition demonstrates how designers and robots can work together to generate new ways of creating the world around us. Over 100 objects, including 28 3-D printed textiles, 26 robotic letterform drawings, 36 robotic light paintings, and a robot-aided stop-motion animation, will be featured, highlighting how this type of education and experience can open the door to the future of craft and design for the next generation. (On view Feb. 24 through June 30 at the Museum of Craft and Design.)

Big Data

The American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) is staging the world premiere of Big Data, a play exploring questions of attention, connection, nourishment, and the dizzying possibilities of AI. Do our devices—tantalizingly incarnate in this funny, sexy, uncanny premiere—really know us best? Are our digital footprints predictive of our future choices, or are they choosing for us? The play explores these questions with a cast that includes Tony Award winner BD Wong.

A.C.T. Artistic Director Pam MacKinnon, who will direct the play, said, “[Playwright] Kate Attwell has written a play so topical about how AI is rapidly and maybe forever changing how we interact and think about what we want…I am also grateful that while the Bay and the world wrestle with the fundamental ethics of where we are headed, that this play is in the wrestle too.” (Feb. 15 to March 10 at A.C.T.'s Toni Rembe Theater)

Misalignment Museum

Misalignmet Museum
The family-friendly Misalignment Museum opened last fall in Thrive City, the 11-acre plaza surrounding Chase Center. The pop-up installation showcases the capabilities of AI technology through thought-provoking, interactive art pieces. Through dynamic and playful art pieces such as Spambots and Paperclip Embrace, the museum is a space to learn about AI and reflect on its power for both destruction and good. (Free entry. Open Thursday and Friday from 4 to 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 5 pm.)

Polish tradition dances added to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Polish tradition dance
Poland’s traditional Polonaise dance, which dates back to the 16th Centure, has been newly inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The Polonaise dance joins five other Polish entries on the list to date :
  • Krakow’s nativity scene tradition
  • beekeeping culture
  • falconry
  • the tradition of floral carpets for Corpus Christi processions, and
  • rafting.

The Polonaise is a joyful group dance by a handful of people or by several hundreds of pairs marching in procession, following the first pair.

A form of joint celebration, the Polonaise commemorates important family milestones and community life, symbolising cooperation, reconciliation and equality.

As it is often danced by people of all generations and backgrounds, it also promotes unity, solidarity and dialogue.

The basic step involves bending one leg while taking a step forward with the other, with pairs raising hands to create bridges under which other participants can pass.

As the tempo of the polonaise is moderate, participants with no prior experience can learn the steps quickly and then join in.

‘Don’t get caught out’: Insurance warning to Taylor Swift fans ahead of record-breaking Eras Tour

With hundreds of thousands of ‘Swifties’ set to descend on Accor Stadium in Sydney and Melbourne Cricket Ground next month for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, Compare the Market is warning concertgoers travelling from interstate to the concerts to safeguard their once-in-a-lifetime experience in case the worst happens.

While many fans have already organised their tickets, flights, accommodation, transportation and friendship bracelets, travel insurance is a must for fans heading to Sydney or Melbourne.

This summer has already caused weather chaos across the country, and Swift’s seven concerts are set to run as the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts more wild weather over the coming months.

Compare the Market’s travel insurance expert and the Executive General Manager of General Insurance, Adrian Taylor, no relation to Taylor Swift, said there’s one thing Swifties shouldn’t forget to organise if they are travelling to the concerts.

“These Taylor Swift shows are set to be some of the biggest concerts Australia has ever seen and fans are spending hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars on flights, concert tickets, accommodation and merchandise,” Mr Taylor said. “The reality is that we’re in the thick of a cruel summer of our own here in Australia, with wild weather impacting Aussies across the country.

“No one heading to these concerts anticipates being caught up in destructive storms, having their flight delayed, losing their luggage or facing a hurdle that prevents them from getting to the show on time, but the reality is that these things can and do happen.

“For example, we know that Cairns airport was recently closed due to wet weather; we’ve seen technical outages bring some of our busiest airports to a halt and there’s always a risk that you’ll arrive in Sydney or Melbourne without your luggage. Domestic travel insurance gives you that peace of mind that you may have some form of assistance if you incur additional travel expenses due to something outside of your control, if your luggage is stolen or goes missing or if you’re unable to use your pre-paid accommodation.”

However, Mr Taylor said anyone travelling to the concerts who is considering travel insurance should act sooner rather than later.

“Not all travel insurance policies are equal and while many can cover you up to a certain limit during a natural disaster or can provide cover if you purchase it as an extra inclusion, it’s vital to find cover before natural disasters turn into ‘known events’. Basically, you don’t want to wait until a major weather event is happening to take out cover, as you likely won’t be able to get cover. This is because insurers tend to provide cover for insured events, which are events that are unforeseeable or unexpected.

“Unless you can cover these expenses yourself – which could often be to the tune of hundreds or thousands of dollars – travel insurance can prove a valuable asset.

However, Mr Taylor warned that if the concerts are delayed or postponed, it’ll likely be an issue you need to take up with your concert ticket provider.

“As we saw late last year in Argentina – Taylor Swift was forced to postpone a sold-out show due to torrential weather,” Mr Taylor said. “If this happens, you’ll need to discuss your options with the concert ticket provider.

“In most cases, they will contact you directly with the relevant information to claim a refund or to attend a rescheduled show. Typically, if you’re unable to attend a rescheduled concert, you’ll be offered a refund. However, read the terms and conditions from your ticket provider carefully, as they usually won’t foot the bill for losses including travel or accommodation if a concert is cancelled or postponed. “

Mr Taylor’s advice for Swifties heading to the Eras Tour.
  1. Buy travel insurance cover as soon as you pay for your air-tickets or pay any deposits for accommodation, etc, as you never know what could impact you from attending a concert.
  2. You’re not leaving the country, so travel insurance won’t cover medical expenses. Domestic travel insurance doesn’t cover any medical expenses. You’ll still be covered by Medicare or your private health insurance in these cases.
  3. Cross your ‘t’s and dot your ‘I’s. Understand exactly which benefits are included in your policy or if you’ll need to purchase any as add-ons. There may also be exclusions, sub-limits and conditions that you need to take note of.

Colour Me Curious! A Vibrant New Sipping Experience Awaits at Bar Trigona at Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur

L-R: The opulent interior of Bar Trigona;
Pastel cocktail; Inca bottled cocktail
The award-winning Bar Trigona, at Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur, is set to unveil the ‘Colour Me Curious’ cocktail menu on 1st February, 2024.

Sparkling with bold hues and playful flavours, the newly crafted beverage selection invites guests to spark their curiosity across a kaleidoscope of locally rooted drinks. Bar Trigona has won Malaysia’s Best Bar 2020-23; #36 on Asia’s Best Bars List 2023; the Ketel One Sustainable Award in 2020 and the Siete Misterios Best Cocktail Menu Award in 2022, and now pushes boundaries further with a cocktail menu that immerses guests in the colourful and abundant aromas and tastes of Malaysia.

“Since its inception, Bar Trigona has been a space for constant discovery,” explains Head Bartender Rohan Matmary. “Our latest cocktails are meticulously designed to awaken all five senses, with each drink unfolding a fascinating story of tastes and textures, colours and aromas.”

Along with the beverages themselves, other facets of the drinking experience are also tailored to spark curiosity. The rainbow-hued menu is as informative as it is eye-catching, while the handcrafted glassware is thoughtfully curated to suit each drink.

Colour Me Curious

Pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in a glass, Bar Trigona’s acclaimed bartenders amplify the wonders of nature. Guests will taste fresh expressions of local staples like nutmeg, rose apple and torch ginger, alongside an innovative incorporation of regional flavours like miso, saffron and ube (purple yam).

Local food-and-drink traditions are elevated with craft mixology techniques: sous pression; fat washing; sous vide; barrel ageing and more. Malaysians can look forward to an intriguing nostalgic journey, while globetrotters will find a gateway to the country’s homegrown abundance.

Menu Highlights:

Sample colourful libations such as the violet-tinted Iris, a decadently nutty take on the classic White Russian; the blushing Pastel, a floral concoction that’s wonderfully easy on the taste buds; and the tropical Inca, a bottled tropical take on the classic Vieux Carré, poured tableside while you marvel at the liquid gold craftsmanship.

What makes the new menu even more appealing is its standout selection of spirit-free drinks, carefully crafted to taste exactly like their alcohol-inclusive counterparts. As Rohan explains, “We’re championing the art of conscious drinking with these signature concoctions, which are just as delicious with or without alcohol.” Designated drivers and teetotallers can safely indulge in creations like Petrichor, a bright and punchy blend of fig, vetiver and pandan and Scarlet, a fizzy and elegant drink woven with raspberry, roselle and black truffle.

The Colour Me Curious journey extends to a selection of bottled cocktails, available in quantities of 1, 2 or 5 serves. Ideal for sharing with friends or as a nightcap to go, these drinks can also be carried back home as surprise gifts!

As guests sip their way through the cocktail list, they can fill up on gourmet bites that pay homage to Malaysia’s multicultural spirit. Guests can keep it fun and flavourful with dishes such as Trigona Tropical Caviar, Padron Peppers Bhaji, Lobster Ramen and Coconut Flambé.

Hello, Honey!

L-R: Curious Classics flight: Trigona Bees Knees;
Trigona Penicillin; Airmail from Trigona
Since the beginning, sustainability has been the golden thread that weaves through Bar Trigona’s story — with the trigona honey bee at its centre. Guests are invited to embark on a journey through the transformation of trigona honey with Curious Classics, a flight of three distinct tasters featuring rum, whisky and gin. A portion from the sale of every cocktail goes towards the revitalisation of indigenous bee habitats. Bar Trigona continues to work closely with Malaysian farmers and food producers with a view to supporting local communities, as well as promoting sustainable practices.

The Colour Me Curious menu will be available at Bar Trigona starting 1st February, 2024.

While recognising and celebrating the success of the industry’s top artists and emerging talent, the Toyota 52nd Golden Guitar Awards was also a moment to honour and acknowledge one of Australia’s most recorded songwriters, Allan Caswell, who was tonight announced as the 2024 inductee into the Australasian Country Music Roll of Renown – country music’s Hall of Fame. Allan Caswell joins previous inductees Beccy Cole, Kasey Chambers, Lee Kernaghan, Slim Dusty, and John Williamson. He has won a total of eight Golden Guitars, 14 TSA awards, one ARIA, one APRA award and two gold singles over his 53-year musical career.

The Toyota 52nd Golden Guitar Awards also featured another special presentation with the Country Music Capital Award presented to long time radio presenter Ray Hadley OAM for his continued support and promotion of Australian Country Music. The Country Music Capital Award, first awarded in 1977, recognise individuals who are not singers, musicians, composers, or music producers and therefore not covered by the regular criteria for the Awards, but who’ve had made an outstanding and sustained contribution to the industry over a long period.

Ray presents The Ray Hadley Country Music Countdown each week, featuring the best country music songs across Australia. The two-hour show features interviews with the biggest names, Top 20 hits, plus profiles of the best new talent in country music - with a focus on emerging Australian artists. As of October 2023, there had been 533 editions of the countdown, which can be heard in 134 different markets across Australia (NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, SA, NT). The show continues to be the number one rating radio program on Sydney radio each week. Ray also uses his record-breaking Mornings program, The Ray Hadley Morning Show, to promote Australian country music.

The night also featured performances from this year’s top nominees and winner’s including Travis Collins, James Johnston, who took to the stage with Zac and George, as well as Brooke McClymont and Adam Eckersley, Fanny Lumsden, Max Jackson, SToReR, Allan Caswell, The Pleasures, Troy Cassar-Daley who sang his new song Let’s Ride, while Luke O’Shea performed a song paying tribute to the late great Joy McKean.

Shoba White, Senior Manager, Regional Operations attended on behalf of Toyota Australia and congratulated all the winners and finalists of the 2024 Toyota Golden Guitar Awards for their impressive musical achievements and contributions to the country music industry.

"For 32 years, Toyota Australia has been a proud partner of the Tamworth Country Music Festival, and we are thrilled to continue supporting Australia’s country music industry and celebrate the talented musicians and artists seen at the Toyota Golden Guitar Awards," she said.

NSW Minister for the Arts, Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy and Minister for Jobs and Tourism, John Graham, said: “As the state’s first Minister for Music, it’s great to be back in Tamworth 3 tonight to congratulate the winners of the 2024 Golden Guitars – the highest honour in Australian country music. The country music industry is in great shape and attracting a new and often younger audience while also forging greater links with the world’s biggest market, the United States.

“We have an incredible depth of home-grown talent in country music and we are building back our live music scene across NSW to provide more stages for that talent to shine - and more unforgettable moments for music fans.

“The Tamworth Country Music Festival is an example to the rest of the state of what can be achieved in the promotion of Australian music and creating a precinct that allows fans to walk between venues from gig to gig.”

Chairman of the Country Music Association of Australia, Mr. Dobe Newton said: “The Golden Guitar Awards continue to demonstrate the diversity and strength of Australia’s country music industry and this year’s winners are a testament to the incredible breadth of talent that is on display.”

Tonight’s results reflect an industry that is diverse, inclusive, and growing from strength to strength and as a community of artists, we are proud that the industry is in safe hands.”

The Toyota Golden Guitar Awards are the only industry affiliated country music awards in Australia and the  greatest celebration of Australian country music talent.  The awards are the pinnacle event on the Australian country music calendar and are presented LIVE by Tamworth Regional Council and supported by the CMAA.

Spectacular Red Crab Migration Unfolds on Christmas Island

Red Crab Migration
One of nature's most awe-inspiring events is now underway on Christmas Island, captivating the imaginations of wildlife enthusiasts worldwide. The annual red crab migration, a remarkable spectacle orchestrated by celestial, tidal and meteorological forces, has commenced, offering a breathtaking display of natural wonder.

Located 1500 km from the Australian mainland in the Indian Ocean Territories, Christmas Island is renowned for hosting this extraordinary phenomenon. The island's rainforests come alive as tens of millions of red crabs embark on a journey from the forest to the coast for their annual mating and spawning ritual. This spectacular migration this year is set against the backdrop of a delayed wet season, attributed to El Niño weather patterns, resulting in limited rainfall this year.

Despite the sporadic nature of this year's event, locals and visitors are enthralled to witness the iconic "great scarlet curtain" of red crabs, a description immortalised by world-renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough. Attenborough, who considered filming the migration among his top 10 TV moments, marvelled at the crabs moving down cliffs and rocks towards the sea.

Each year the migration begins with the first rains of the wet season. The spawning event this year is anticipated around the 4th of February. During this second phase of the migration, each female red crab is expected to release up to 100,000 eggs into the Indian Ocean. Approximately one month later, baby red crabs hopefully return to the shore, initiating their journey back into the tropical forests of Christmas Island.

"The red crab migration is a testament to the incredible natural attractions of Christmas Island. It's a sight that has drawn visitors from every corner of the globe, and its incredible to see the Christmas Island community and visitors focused on ensuring the protection of this ecological marvel,” said David Mulheron, owner of Freedive CI and Chair of the Christmas Island Tourism Association.

Red Crab Migration
“Though the migration is the main stage event, the island's famed red crabs can be seen year-round. This globally renowned event not only spotlights the island's wildlife offerings but also serves as a testament to the marvels of the natural world here," he continued.

"Visitors have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in a variety of natural wonders above and below the surface, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts. We warmly invite the world to discover and be captivated by Christmas Island's one of a kind, natural charm. It's a destination that is truly unforgettable."

Witnessing this incredible migration is a unique experience on Christmas Island. For more information and to plan your visit, please contact Christmas Island Visitor Centre CITA@christmas.net.au or visit www.christmas.net.au.
