The Wanuskewin Heritage Park has been deemed the top Indigenous Tourism Destination of Canada in 2023

Wanuskewin Heritage Park
The Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a National Heritage Site celebrating Northern Plains Indigenous cultures, has been deemed the top Indigenous Tourism Destination of Canada in 2023.

The recognition was made by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada Wanuskewin Heritage Park is located on Treaty Six Territory and Homeland of the Métis, and has been a gathering place for all nations of the Northern Plains for over 6,400 years.
It is the longest-running archaeological dig site in Canada and currently on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Status.

If and when successful, it will become the first UNESCO site in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan is a Canadian province that borders the United States. Grassland covers its southern plains, and to the north are the rugged rock of the Canadian Shield plateau, coniferous forests, rivers and lakes.

Regina, the provincial capital, is home to the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, with exhibits on natural history and the people of Canada’s First Nations.

In making its award the Tourism Industry Association of Canada found that ‘Wanuskewin Heritage Park truly exemplifies the spirit of Indigenous tourism, showcasing a commitment to authenticity, innovation, and enriching the visitor experience, and their dedication has undoubtedly contributed to the growth and promotion of tourism in Saskatoon’.

Wanuskewin was also selected as a finalist in the Culinary Event of the Year for the Han Wi Moon Dinner, which is an annual series of dinners, held annually in August by renowned Indigenous Chef Jenni Lessard.

The dinners feature a three-course meal foraged from the land and served on an ancient bison jump. Guests are then treated to stories and a theatrical performance by local artists immersed in a stunning prairie setting nestled on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River.

Traditional design motifs of this ancient city can be seen in the textured tile-like wall finishes that echo the wooden shingles that have adorned traditional Chiang Mai homes for centuries and have been seamlessly brought into the 21st century in the clean and bright contemporary design of Little Shelter.

Gotanda’s growing reputation

The Gotanda JP Building
The Gotanda neighborhood in Shinagawa City, known mainly as a residential area and business district, is often overlooked by tourists.

Gotanda straddles the Meguro River, which provides a picturesque spot for a stroll as well as hanami flower viewing when the cherry trees bloom in spring.

Gotanda Station is a major stop on the JR Yamanote Line and provides access to Sakurada Dori, one of Tokyo major avenues.

Gotanda is an up-and-coming area, with new developments including the Gotanda JP Building, which will be completed December 2023.

We also shine a spotlight on some fashionable ramen shops in Gotanda, where you can enjoy the authentic taste of Michelin-level Japanese cuisine at an affordable price.

Gotanda JP Building

The Gotanda JP Building
The Gotanda JP Building is scheduled to be completed in December 2023, on the former site of Yu-Port Hall. This large complex has a height of approximately 100 meters, a site area of approximately 6,700 square meters, and a total floor area of approximately 69,000 square meters. The partially steel-framed reinforced concrete structure has 20 floors above ground and 3 floors underground. Based on the concept of "Tokyo, Next Creation," it aims to be a next-generation urban hub that encourages a variety of encounters and exchanges.

A food hall on the first floor will be easily accessible to local residents and visitors alike. The second floor will be a shared office space, aimed at promoting collaboration and innovation among business, including start-up companies. Meanwhile, the third floor will have a multipurpose hall, designed to support a range of cultural, business and entertainment activities. The 3rd to 12th floors will provide one of the largest floor areas for offices in the Gotanda area. A Hoshino Resorts hotel will occupy the 14th to 20th floors, with a restaurant and an open terrace with great views over the city. These will also be accessible to visitors not staying at the hotel. Around the building, a “Gotanda Forest” will be created with newly-planted trees.

Michelin-level gourmet ramen

In April 2023, a new ramen restaurant, Hakata Ittaiichi, opened in Gotanda. The chef is Goji Kawarabata, the owner of the famous “Kappo Ajimi” restaurant in the busy district of Nakasu, Fukuoka. After years of hard work, he earned a Michelin star and now y ou can enjoy his famous “sea bream fish bone ramen” in Tokyo. With a deep and rich umami flavor, this ramen has a signature cloudy soup made from boiling the heads and bones of sea bream, which is known as the “king of fish” in Japan.

Menya Sign was selected as a Bib Gourmand restaurant in the Michelin Guide Tokyo 2022, and is known for its ramen and sake pairing. Bib Gourmand is a Michelin award for restaurants that offer high quality food at a reasonable price. Menya Sign serves two main types of ramen, “soy sauce” style and “salt” style. They also have abura soba noodles (soupless ramen), as well as a limited edition ramen that changes each month. 21 Carpenter Unveils Its Transformation of Former Remittance House into a Design-Forward Luxury Hotel

The Heritage and Urban Wings at 21 Carpenter
Heritage hotel 21 Carpenter officially opened its doors to guests on 6 December 2023. The former remittance house — hailed as the birthplace of banking in Singapore — offers guests a blend of heritage and modernity after a contemporary update by architectural firm WOHA. Located between Clarke Quay and Boat Quay, 21 Carpenter boasts central accessibility, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the bustling streets of Singapore’s CBD and Chinatown.

"At 21 Carpenter, we aspire to be more than just a place to rest; we're an invitation to step into Singapore's rich stories. Our thoughtful design preserves links to the past while embracing the future through our five brand pillars: Design, Service, Gastronomy, Community and Sustainability," shares General Manager Tarun Kalra.

Design

Following a stunning restoration by WOHA, 21 Carpenter sits across four historic four-storey shophouses and a contemporary five-storey extension. As one of the oldest shophouses in the area, special attention was given to conserving the original features of the building in line with URA conservation guidelines; the facade’s Shanghai plaster dates back to the 1930s, and on the building’s exterior, Chinese characters list cities and regions to which the remittances were sent. Poetic details reference the building’s history, with the Urban Wing’s aluminium art facade featuring excerpts from original remittance letters.

The Heritage Suite at 21 Carpenter

Within, all rooms are thoughtfully designed spaces incorporating old and new. Employing a warm and inviting palette with Asian design influences, all furniture was custom designed by WOHA. The Heritage Wing comprises 26 rooms over the first four floors, including the Heritage 2-Bedroom Suite spanning 55 sqm. The top five levels, known as the Urban Wing, feature 22 contemporary, light-filled rooms, such as the 30 sqm Urban Luxe room, where floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the city and the bay. Unlike many shophouse hotels, WOHA ensured every room has a full-sized window.

Above the bustle, 21 Carpenter offers exclusive spaces for guests to unwind and relax. The intimate Garden Terrace on level 3 invites quiet connection and can serve as a small event space for intimate gatherings. The Rooftop Infinity Pool & Lounge, with the first exposed stainless-steel pool in Singapore, gives way to skyline views of Marina Bay.

Service

Guided by the philosophy ‘Thoughtfully Yours,’ the hotel prides itself on genuine gestures, from seamless check-ins to a friendly welcome. The team is ever ready to provide recommendations for nearby eateries or routes to explore the river and Marina Bay using the hotel’s Linus bicycles. 21 Carpenter balances efficient service with a personal touch, making guests feel like cherished friends invited to visit Singapore and welcome to return anytime.

Gastronomy

An exciting new dining landmark in Singapore will soon launch at the hotel: Kee’s, a Neo-Bistro & Bar headed by Michelin-starred Chef Andrew Walsh as Culinary Director. A nod to the building’s 1936 incarnation as Chye Hua Seng Wee Kee, coupled with a playful reference to its location between the two Quays, Kee’s will be a magnet for epicureans when it opens in early 2024. The street-level venue will offer European-inspired bistro fare with a tight selection of local classics. Kee’s is conceptualised to be the city’s social heart, with guests and locals alike encouraged to linger longer over comforting food, wines, and cocktails.

“Combining the team’s brilliant dishes with our thoughtfully curated beverage menu and warm hospitality, we aim to make Kee’s the go-to destination in the neighbourhood, where guests can always anticipate a great time,” shares Glynn Tay, Director of F&B.

Community

21 Carpenter will envelop guests in the richness of Singapore’s burgeoning art and creative scene through an extensive collection curated by art and design consultancy The Artling. A dynamic group of emerging and established Singaporean artists are featured in spaces that span the entire hotel. Adorning the Lobby is a stunning tapestry by Heman Chong, his first piece utilising this medium. On the Rooftop Infinity Pool & Lounge is a hand-drawn charcoal mural by Dawn Ang of Aeropalmics, reflecting clouds over Clarke Quay. Other featured artists include Ruben Pang, Jamie Teo, Aarti Bartake, Soph O and more.

The Lobby, with Reader and Writers #1 by Heman Chong
“Curating art for a heritage property like 21 Carpenter is an exciting challenge. Beyond decorating walls, you want pieces that speak to the building’s unique history and journey. WOHA’s incredible restoration offered the perfect canvas to weave old and new through a diverse mix of mediums, reflecting Singapore’s dynamic spirit,” shares Talenia Gajardo, director and founder of the Artling.

Local names and brands enrich the hotel: Floral Kokoro embellishes social spaces with exquisite floral arrangements in custom-made vases by Jenevieve Studio. In Good Company designed custom robes and independent artist Liu Liling furnished the luxurious bed throws. Soda Lemon SG created the sleek toothbrush holders using upcycled glass, while the bespoke Cups and Saucer sets are crafted by Un Studio.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a big part of 21 Carpenter, from preserving the building’s historic materials to eco-friendly features. The original 1930s Chengal wood has been carefully reused in lobby floors, Heritage suites and the sculptural handrail along the hotel’s five-foot way. The rooftop gleams with 22 photovoltaic panels to supplement power needs, while a hybrid cooling system, combining ceiling fans with air conditioning, lowers electricity consumption. The aluminium art facade of the Urban extension also functions as a sunscreen, further reducing the need for active cooling. The hotel aims to reduce single-use plastic waste by employing reusable water carafes and amenity dispensers.

21 Carpenter opened on 6 December 2023, with an opening special offer of 30% off best available rate (starting from $355++) until end-Feb 2024. Kee’s is set to launch in Q1 2024.

Sacred sites are among the world’s most visited and venerated places

They offer another level of experience to both visitors and pilgrims, full of intensity, presence and, for some, a higher level of consciousness.

The drawback is that they are often overcrowded whose presence tends to impact a very special moment.

Secret Sacred Sites, a new Jonglez publication by Martin Gray, reviews 100 lesser-known sacred sites that are often only known to locals, guaranteeing a truly authentic visit.

National Geographic photographer Gray has visited 160 countries and photographed hundreds of these sites.

For the book he has selected his favourite hidden holy places.

Mongolia

For seekers of wide-open spaces, adventures and culture, the capital is teeming with people and unique attractions. Or take a 2,000-mile boat trip on the MV Ganges Vilas, the world’s longest river cruise. www.incredibleindia.org

Morocco

There’s nothing quite like wandering the Sahara Desert on camelback, hunting for bargains in a Marrakech souk and exploring the enchanting blue city of Chefchaouen. But this North African country made our list in 2024 thanks to the buzz from its historic performance at the World Cup, its ascension to the echelon of the world surf circuit, and its revived music festival, Mawazine. Research for Best in Travel 2024 took place prior to the 2023 earthquake which severely affected areas south of Marrakesh. We suggest travellers check for the latest updates on individual locations. Uzbekistan

From oasis to oasis follow the trading networks of centuries past. High-speed rail and a convenient domestic flight network have replaced the camel caravans once connecting prosperous fortress towns, yet the ancient cultural hubs of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva still evoke the era of the Silk Road. In the Nuratau Mountains, a community based tourism initiative shows visitors the life of shepherding communities. www.lonelyplanet.com/uzbekistan

Pakistan

The country has long lured travellers from all over the world, and its overdue for a resurgence. Following easing of political tensions, adventure tour companies are returning to Pakistan’s buzzing bazaars, Mughal-built mosques, alpine valleys, and snow-dusted Himalayan passes. Đà Lạt strives to become “Green Paradise” through sustainable tourism development

Striving to become a "Green Paradise" with attractions such as leading eco-tourism, resort, and health care centers in Việt Nam and Southeast Asia is one of the development directions for Đà Lạt’s urban planning.

LÂM ĐỒNG - Striving to become a "Green Paradise" with attractions such as eco-tourism and health tourism in Việt Nam and Southeast Asia is one of the development directions for Đà Lạt’s urban planning.

In the development plans for its urban and suburban areas, Đà Lạt aims to be a high-quality tourism centre in Việt Nam as well as Southeast Asia, focusing on intelligent tourism.

In recent years, many tourists exploring Đà Lạt have found that this plateau city with vast areas under flowers and pine forests is not as they had expected.

A lack of systematic and sustainable cooperation has led to monotonous and overlapping tourism products, with limited competitiveness.

Revenue from tourism activities does not correspond to the current number of tourists.

The road and air transportation networks linking Đà Lạt and Lâm Đồng to crucial tourism destinations have seen some expansion, yet they still fall short, failing to meet the region's growing tourism demands and not fully capitalising on the potential for regional connectivity.

Furthermore, there are limited promotional and advertising initiatives targeting foreign markets, and the tourism workforce does not meet international requirements.

Moreover, there is a lack of well coordination among various departments, agencies, localities, and relevant entities involved in tourism development.

To address these challenges and position Đà Lạt as the focal point of Lâm Đồng Province, the city must take fundamental, creative, and sustainable steps.

Sustainable tourism development

First, more eco-tourism, resort, healthcare and wellness centres should be established.

It is crucial to develop high-quality and diverse tourism products, enhancing the value of tourist experiences based on the locality's potential and advantages, in line with market demands and natural landscape conservation.

Second, Đà Lạt should focus on investing in six main tourism product categories, namely luxury resorts and health tourism, eco-tourism and adventure, agricultural and rural tourism, cultural and spiritual tourism, and urban tourism and creative tourism.

Third, special priority should be given to unique tourism products and the distinctive strengths of Đà Lạt.

Ngàn Thông Bridge in Đà lat is a new popular tourism destination.
VNA Photo
This is crucial to enhancing the brand highlights for Lâm Đồng Tourism, even in off-peak seasons.

Last, to achieve the goal of developing Đà Lạt into a high-quality and modern city linked with brands like the City of Love, City of Heritage, City of Creativity, and UNESCO's City of Music, effective urban management policies are necessary to balance conservation and development.

Alongside preserving the urban heritage landscape and upgrading the quality of existing tourist attractions, Đà Lạt should focus on investing in three large-scale integrated resort areas, including Tuyền Lâm Lake, Đại Ninh Lake and Đankia - Suối Vàng. - VNS

Arabian Travel Market (ATM) has announced a strategic partnership with the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) and the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) for the upcoming edition of the event, which takes place from 6-9 May 2024 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The renowned global organisations have been appointed as ‘Knowledge Partners’ for the regional trade show, providing in-depth insights and opportunities for the thriving segments of business events and travel.

According to the ICCA statistical forecast, which charts the history and performance of the International Association Meetings Industry from 1963 to 2022, 10,602 business events were recorded worldwide last year, of which 9,009 (85%) were in-person. This represented an astounding 349% increase from the previous year when only 2,007 in-person events occurred. Interestingly, the Middle East accounted for the highest percentage of in-person delegates (94%) in last year’s official figures.

The business travel industry is also experiencing significant growth, as evidenced by statistics from the 2023 GBTA Business Travel Index™ Report, which found that the global business travel industry rebounded faster than expected in 2023. Pent-up demand following the pandemic and healthier economic conditions than forecasted were highlighted as significant contributing factors for this shift. The report also stated that

CAIRNS ANNOUNCED AS HOST CITY FOR INCENTIVE SHOWCASE

Tourism Australia’s signature incentive showcase will return in 2024 with the event, normally held every two years, to be held in Tropical North Queensland, as Australia continues to rebuild a strong pipeline of international business events.

At the conclusion of Dreamtime 2023 in Adelaide, it was announced Cairns would be the host city for Australia’s next incentive showcase in September 2024. It was also confirmed the event, starting with next year’s showcase, will now be called ‘Australia Next’ to align with Business Events Australia’s bespoke magazine for incentive planners.

Tourism Australia Managing Director, Phillipa Harrison, said to help fast track the Australian business events industry’s recovery, international incentive planners will be hosted in Australia in consecutive years, with the showcase returning to every two years after 2025.

“After having the event on hold for four years we are so pleased Dreamtime has returned in 2023, giving us the opportunity to welcome international business events planners and media back to Australia,” Ms Harrison said.

“The event in Adelaide, and the program of familiarisations around the country, have provided the visiting qualified buyers and media the chance to see first-hand some of the new product which has come online over the past few years.”

“We know there is so much more for the international buyers to see around the country, so it is great our signature business events showcase will return once again in 2024 with ‘Australia Next’ to be held in Cairns.”

“The leads generated from Dreamtime in Adelaide this year and Australia Next in the future will drive real business outcomes, which will play a more important role than ever before as we rebuild a strong pipeline of international business events.”

Tourism Australia’s Executive General Manager of Commercial & Business Events Australia, Robin Mack, said the signature business events showcase will be crucial to get the Australian business events industry back to where it was in 2019.

“The return of Dreamtime in Adelaide this year and Australia Next in the future will help the business events industry to once again attract more than a million visitors a year to our country, contributing $4.5 billion,” Mr Mack said.

“We thank our host partner Business Events Adelaide for making sure the first Dreamtime in four years was one to remember and we look forward to working with Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef to make Australia Next in 2024 just as memorable.”

Speaking about next year’s event, Tourism Tropical North Queensland said it was proud to be the host partner for Australia Next in 2024 in Cairns, with support from Tourism and Events Queensland.

Queensland Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the domestic and international convention market was big business for the State’s world-class visitor destinations.

“Queensland’s popularity as a corporate events and convention destination is booming with business travel growing 77 per cent to a record $4.7 billion in the last year,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“With a runway to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Queensland brings together a perfect mix of business and leisure for building and accelerating industry partnerships and knowhow.

“The possibilities for Australia Next in 2024 and Cairns are endless.”

Member for Cairns and Assistant Tourism Minister Michael Healy said the Cairns Convention Centre had recently completed a significant expansion.

“The Palaszczuk Government has invested $176 million in an impressive extension and renovation of the Cairns Convention Centre to help events like Australia Next in 2024 really shine,” Mr Healy said.

Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has unveiled expansive transformation plans following its acquisition by a fund managed by global investment firm KKR in strategic partnership with Futuro Capital and Marprop Real Estate Investors in 2021. Scheduled to commence in January and complete in Spring 2024, the transformation includes an extensive refurbishment to enhance the hotel's offering for its guests while retaining its distinctive heritage.

The investment behind Sofitel Sydney Wentworth's transformation reflects the hotel's impressive leading position at the centre of Sydney's financial district and confidence in the hospitality sector as Australia continues to emerge strongly from the pandemic as a top travel and business destination.

With a storied history spanning over half a century, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has been an iconic feature of Sydney's urban landscape since its inception as the Wentworth Hotel in 1966. It was Sydney's first 5-star international hotel and encapsulates the essence of 1960s jet-set glamour.

Led by architecture and interior design firm Fender Katsalidis, the refurbishment of the heritage-listed property encompasses a comprehensive redesign of all 436 guest rooms and suites, corridors, club lounge and lobby areas. Key to the refurbishment is the introduction of a completely new world-class dining precinct, including new restaurants and bars.

Karen Morris, Associate Principal, Fender Katsalidis says, “We are honoured to be a part of the refurbishment of the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, an iconic landmark on the Sydney skyline. Our design vision is to revitalise the guest experience while preserving the hotel's rich cultural and social heritage, re-establishing its position as a luxury hotel destination.
