Village in Hanoi. Photo by courtesy of architect Oopatham Ratanasupa
An installation exhibition has opened to visitors and art lovers in the famous ancient Duong Lam Ancient Village, Son Tay Town, on the outskirts of Hanoi.

Dozens of valuable documents, sketches and structures of Duong Lam Ancient Village, and many Vietnamese old house architectures, diligently collected by Thai architect Oopatham Ratanasupa for 13 years, are now on display at the village.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held on October 15 with a program called "Sketching Exchange of Duong Lam Ancient Village", which was organized by Urban Sketchers Vietnam, Urban Sketchers Hanoi, Hanoi Watercolor Artists Club and Luly Art Class.

According to Nguyen Dang Thao, Head of the Management Board of Duong Lam Ancient Village Relics, the exhibition aims to provide locals and tourists with interesting perspectives on the architecture of Duong Lam Ancient Village.

"This event partly contributes to raising awareness among local people, especially children, on preserving the traditional values of Duong Lam Ancient Village. Based on this exhibition, there will be more cultural activities, exhibitions, drawing classes, and talk shows introducing heritage in the public spaces of the ancient village in the coming time," he said.

On this occasion, the management of Duong Lam Ancient Village Relics also honored Oopatham Ratanasupa - who has been diligently researching and drawing the typical architecture of Duong Lam Ancient Village since 2013.

Known to the public by his Vietnamese nickname "Xe Om" or motorbike rider, the architect first visited Duong Lam Ancient Village in 2013 and has been continuously drawing and sketching the ancient houses here ever since.

The Duong Lam Ancient Village Architectural Project has been carried out by Oopatham since 2013, with an overall map of the village illustrated by photos, sketches and objects to show the unique features of the ancient houses and old structures. Up to now, the architect has amassed a collection, preserving the beauty of Duong Lam in his very original way.

Oopatham Ratanasupa graduated from Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture Paris La Villette and worked as an architect in France for nearly 10 years. He is currently an instructor at the Faculty of Architecture of Silpakorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, and a visiting professor at several prestigious universities around the world.

Through the exhibition, the Management Board of Duong Lam Ancient Village Relics wishes to raise the awareness of locals and visitors in preserving, conserving and promoting the value of the thousand-year-old heritage.

TURNING UP LIVE MUSIC IN NSW

The NSW Government is removing red tape to encourage live music and local entertainment zones that are as vibrant and diverse as traditional precincts like the Sydney CBD.

Regulatory frameworks are also being overhauled to prevent single complainants from shutting down venues.

A package of reforms introduced to NSW Parliament will empower venues that host live music to trade two hours longer under streamlined licensing laws.

The package also introduced higher hurdles for complaints to progress.

r CMF performance on Friday night
Last weekend over 135 live shows from close to 60 artists lit up Broadbeach as Groundwater Country Music Festival (CMF) celebrated ten years of country music on the Gold Coast. The award-winning festival saw tens of thousands of music fans coming together to watch their favourite artists and share a love of country music. One performance, by one standout artist was voted by fans as best in show!

On the 2023 lineup were some of the Australia’s best and most loved country acts plus some incredible international guests but it was local sensation Casey Barnes, who was announced as the winner of the 2023 P&O People’s Choice Award. Ironically, Casey got his first big break playing at Groundwater CMF (formerly Broadbeach Country Music Festival) in 2014.

This is the second time Casey Barnes has won the hearts of fans at Groundwater CMF having been the recipient of the inaugural P&O People’s Choice Award in 2019.

His performance, personality and passion ignited the Surf Parade Stage last Friday night captivating the crowd of thousands, that included his own family.

“I am absolutely blown away to take out this year's P&O People's Choice Award at Groundwater CMF!” said Casey Barnes. “We were only saying yesterday that Friday night's show easily will go down as one of my absolute favourites of my career to date... it was such a special night. There's nothing better than a hometown crowd and it was even more special to have my entire family there too. A huge thank you to all the fans who voted and have supported this amazing festival over the last 10 years and a massive congrats to Mark Duckworth and the entire team on another incredible event!”

Groundwater CMF, along with the festival’s Support Partner P&O Cruises, invited festival goers to show their love and appreciation by voting for their favourite artist across the three-day festival. With an epic lineup including Lee Kernaghan, Amber Lawrence, Adam Harvey & Beccy Cole, The Wolfe Brothers, USA sensation Jackson Dean and of course Gold Coast local Casey Barnes it was always going to be a tight race to the finish line.

“The P&O People’s Choice Award has become a popular part of the Groundwater CMF experience, with thousands of entries coming in throughout the festival,” said Mark Duckworth, Festival Director.
"Casey has been a festival favourite for some time, so it doesn’t surprise me that he has taken out this fan-nominated award for the second time. Casey’s headline show this year was a lot of fun, drawing huge crowds and the band were on fire!”

2023 has been a continuation of wins for Casey Barnes, having picked up Golden Guitar Award wins for Album of the Year and Top Selling Album of the Year for his latest album, Light It Up along with the APRA Award for Most Performed Country Work and the 2022 ARIA Award for Best Country Album. Now with a second P&O People’s Choice Award under his belt there seems to be no stopping this local country star who is now also making major inroads in the US.

Casey is not the only winner, one very lucky voter has won a holiday for two onboard P&O Cruises’ Country Music Cruise, departing from Brisbane on 30 November 2024.

“We are delighted to have once again joined forces with Groundwater Country Music Festival to celebrate Australia’s remarkable country music talent,” said Ryan Taibel, Vice President Sales & Partnerships of P&O Cruises Australia.
“While all performances throughout the festival were incredible, Casey Barnes sung just the right tune, winning fans’ hearts, and votes. From the entire P&O Cruises team, thank you for all who voted and congratulations Casey on receiving this year’s People’s Choice Award.”

Christopher Baker’s Arctic landscape

In 2017, landscape artist Christopher Baker took his board-bound sketchbook to Cummingøya in the Norwegian Arctic.

It was late June, but temperatures could still fall to well below minus degrees centigrade with wind-chill, and Christopher had to work quickly before his paints froze.

The resulting exhibition, at the Osborne Studio Gallery, London, comprises one eightfoot work of Arctic subjects and a group from the sixty or more landscapes he made following his Cummingøya expedition.

The Cummingøya sketchbook, weighing some 23 kilos, contains Baker's expression of the rock, snow, ice and water that forms that forbidding ancient terrain.

Cuisine increases the appeal of Vietnam tourism

Introducing traditional cuisine at a culinary culture
festival held in 2023. (Photo: Viet Dung)
Thanks to its rich and diverse culinary heritage and the refinement in cooking and enjoyment cultivated over thousands of years, Vietnam holds huge potential to develop culinary tourism, turning its gastronomy into a captivating advantage to attract visitors.

The World Food Travel Association (WFTA) estimated that a staggering 81% of international travellers express a desire to explore local cuisine. They are willing to spend an average of 25-35% of their travel budget on food and beverages during their journeys. Statistics showed that culinary experiences have evolved beyond mere sustenance for travellers and have gradually become one of the primary motivations for tourism. Culinary offerings strongly influence destination choices and stimulate travellers' spending.

Therefore, there is no reason for Vietnam not to leverage its culinary strengths to enhance its appeal as a tourist destination, considering that Vietnamese cuisine has consistently received international recognition. The renowned American travel publication Travel + Leisure named Vietnam as the Best Culinary Destination of the Bucket List Places in Asia for 2023. Readers of the world's largest travel platform, TripAdvisor, also voted Hanoi as one of the world’s top 20 food destinations for 2023.

Before these accolades, many famous Vietnamese dishes such as pho, banh mi (baguette), bun cha (noodles with grilled pork), banh cuon (steamed rice roll) and more, had been honoured by various reputable international media outlets. This further emphasises that Vietnamese cuisine is indeed a valuable resource that could provide a comparative advantage, improving the country's competitiveness on the global tourism map.

In recent years, the appeal of culinary experiences has received increased attention in the design and promotion of travel products. The concept of "culinary tourism" has been more widely recognised, as some companies have begun to hold culinary tours and experiences. However, these activities remain on a small scale.

The Vietnam Cuisine Culture Association (VCCA) has initiated a project titled "Building and Developing Vietnamese Culinary Culture into a National Brand for 2022-2024".

In the first phase of this project, VCCA awarded certificates to 121 typical Vietnamese culinary dishes, selected from 421 nominations nationwide. The second phase aims to create a comprehensive collection of 1,000 typical Vietnamese dishes and transform this data into an online culinary map and a virtual culinary museum.

To create unforgettable experiences, experts suggested customising the culinary experiences of tourists, by combining exploration and hands-on participation, allowing them to engage in activities such as farming, food preparation, and cooking, with the guidance of culinary experts. This approach helps visitors understand Vietnamese cuisine on a deeper level, appreciating the intricacy and cultural significance of each regional dish.

Nguyen Le Phuc, Vice Chairman of Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), said culinary tourism is an important part of Vietnam's tourism development strategy until 2023, to enhance the country's competitive edge and tourism brand.

According to him, the VNAT is focusing on building high-quality, attractive culinary tourism products, enabling tourists to explore the cultural essence and community life at each destination, through the lens of local food and beverages. They could also learn about the tradition of eating and cultural etiquette, according to Vietnamese customs.

He noted that the sector will also popularize Vietnamese culinary culture to the world, through events at home and abroad, especially in countries set as key tourism markets.

FEEL NEW ON THE SAPPHIRE COAST CAMPAIGN SUCCESS

Destination NSW, in consultation with Sapphire Coast Destination Marketing, recently delivered a Feel New marketing campaign in response to challenges that emerged in the region due to COVID-19-related border closures.

The campaign was delivered via the Feel New Co-operative Marketing Program, which provided four regions that had been hardest hit by state border closures - The Murray, Sapphire Coast, The Tweed and Broken Hill - with bespoke marketing support aligned to the Feel New brand. Learn more here.

The Sapphire Coast campaign targeted travellers from Sydney, Southern NSW and the ACT across YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and digital advertising in News Corp’s Escape magazine. The objective of the campaign was to increase appeal and consideration of the Sapphire Coast among 25 to 44-year-olds by encouraging the audience to travel to the region to experience natural beauty without the crowds.

Research conducted by Destination NSW into the effectiveness of the campaign showed it was highly successful in meeting its core objectives, with both appeal (40 per cent) and consideration of a trip to the Sapphire Coast (38 per cent) increasing significantly with people who saw the campaign, versus those who had not.

In addition, 74 per cent of those who saw the campaign went on to take action, including 18 per cent visiting a website about the Sapphire Coast for further information; 17 per cent deciding to expand their itinerary with additional Sapphire Coast locations; 13 per cent speaking to family and or friends about going to the Sapphire Coast for a holiday or short break; 12 per cent extending their length of stay by a night or more; and eight per cent booking a new trip to the Sapphire Coast during the campaign period.

The campaign delivered over 12.9 million impressions via paid media with over 4.5 million completed views on YouTube.

The Sapphire Coast pages on VisitNSW received 46,300 visits and generated 7600 leads to operators in Sapphire Coast during the campaign period. This was a 36.5 per cent increase in traffic during the campaign period compared to the previous period.

Britain’s most haunted places – and how to explore them

Dare you visit our darkest, most haunted corners? From playful poltergeists to headless queens, Britain’s oldest houses and landmarks are (legend has it) brimming with ghosts. Whether you’re an avid ghoul-hunter or an ardent sceptic, these spooky tours, creepy pubs and infamous hotels will certainly send a shiver down your spine…

Hampton Court Palace, Richmond

For more Tudor terrors, head to Hampton Court Palace. King Henry VIII has been spotted here. You may hear Catherine Howard’s chilling screams or even see Jane Seymour in the shadows. In 2003, they were joined by a new ghoul, the ‘Skeletor’: he was caught on CCTV opening a door but then disappeared without a trace.

Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire

Looming over its namesake town, the ruins of Whitby Abbey inspired Bram Stoker to write the tale of Dracula, and you don’t need much imagination to see why. Maybe you’ll witness the spectre of St Hilda peering from a window, or the wails of Constance de Beverley, an imprisoned nun? Popular ghost walks depart from a nearby graveyard…

Margam Castle, Port Talbot

If you hear children giggling at Margam Castle, you’re in trouble. Apparently, they love to lurk in doorways and levitate objects – while the murdered gamekeeper screams with rage, and an old blacksmith roams the grounds. So much fun! On its Paranormal Night events expect sightings of floating orbs are ‘abundant’ - you have been warned.

Cawdor Castle, Nairnshire

Have you seen Muriel Calder? You can’t miss her: she has long brown hair, a blue dress – and no hands. So we’re told, this Cawdor Castle heiress was murdered by her father in the 1700s, after she was caught cavorting with a rival clan member. Perhaps you’ll see her in an upstairs window, looking out for her lover…

Blickling Estate, Norfolk

Always dreamed of meeting royalty? Hopefully you’ll bump into Anne Boleyn at Blickling House, as she wanders the corridors with her severed head. On 19 May, the anniversary of her death, ghost hunters gather at the estate’s gates: legend has it, she can be seen arriving at her birthplace in a carriage pulled by headless horses.

Mary King’s Close, Edinburgh

Edinburgh certainly has a few grisly secrets around its aging cobbled streets but Mary King’s Close is its darkest. This underground city is supposedly overrun with ghouls: plague victims, phantom pipers, prisoners of war and even a headless drummer. If you’re brave enough for a guided tour, don’t forget to bring a doll for Annie, its resident ghost-child…

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall

Is it a giant fox, an escaped zoo animal, or something more sinister? While you’re hiking on Cornwall’s Bodmin Moor, try not to dwell on The Beast. This huge panther-like cat has been spotted some 60 times over the years, with yellow eyes and insatiable hunger for livestock. In 2016, a set of big paw prints were spotted in nearby St Austell.

Pluckley, Kent

Maybe you should think twice before visiting Pluckley. It looks lovely, but it’s actually Britain’s most haunted village, plagued by a shrieking man, a woman who set fire to herself, and a highwayman who appears at ‘Fright Corner’ – to name but a few. A drink at the Black Horse might soothe your nerves, but beware, you maybe sharing your pint with a ghost or two.

Dare you stay in these ghostly hotels?

Craig y Nos Castle

Want to party with poltergeists? Join a seance to chat with the spirits? Craig y Nos Castle in the Brecon Beacons is full of opportunities to spook yourself silly. It was once a sanitorium, and has been running ghost tours for over a decade.

Drovers Inn

If its taxidermy animals don’t give you the creeps, the Drovers Inn’s ghoulish stories certainly will. From dead children and ghostly lights, to a frozen family at the foot of your bed, this Loch Lomond hotel isn’t quite as serene as it looks.

Chillingham Castle

Feeling fearless? Join a ghost-hunting tour of Northumberland’s Chillingham Castle, before bedding down in this medieval fortress for the night. With a little luck - or maybe not - you’ll meet its woman-in-white in the pantry, and witness the spooky voices in the chapel.

St Briavels Castle, Gloucestershire

At 800 years old, St Briavels Castle – now a YHA hostel – has seen it all. But its gatehouse still holds horrible secrets: visitors often report a chilling atmosphere, and its walls bear the scars of graffiti carved by long-deceased prisoners.

Paranormal pints: Britain’s spookiest pubs

Pilchard Inn, Devon

It won’t just be the timbers which are shivering here. In the 1300s, the Pilchard Inn was the hideout of pirate Tom Crocker, who was eventually hanged for smuggling. Legend has it, he appears on the August anniversary of his death.

Stag Inn, Hastings

With its mummified cats, a murdered sea captain in the cellar, and ghoulish girl dressed all in white, The Stag Inn isn’t for the faint-hearted. Ask the bar staff about the secret underground tunnel, if you dare.

Adam and Eve, Norwich

The spirit of Lord Sheffield lives on at the Adam and Eve, where he likes to run his fingers through customers’ hair! He was murdered here in 1549, and the pub is a favourite of ghost hunters.

The Skirrid Mountain Inn, Abergavenny

Welcome to the most haunted pub in Wales. While it serves a great pint, Abergavenny’s Skirrid Mountain Inn is best known for its creepy footsteps, slamming doors and whispering voices.

Ye Olde Starre Inne, York

This historic York pub is popular with both the living and dead. Its cellar was a Civil War mortuary, which explains the blood-curdling screams – while two ghost cats are often seen around the bar.

Lively cultural tourism week in Van Phuc Craft Village

The painting team works on a large painting in the flower garden
These days, Van Phuc Craft Village is a hive of activity in preparation for the upcoming cultural tourism and trade week to be held here.

The program with the theme "Van Phuc - Colors of Integration" is part of the activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Van Phuc Ward and the recognition of Van Phuc silk craft as a national intangible cultural heritage.

The Van Phuc Cultural Tourism and Trade Week 2023 will run from October 26 to November 2 in Ha Dong District, Hanoi, with the aim of promoting traditional silk weaving and boosting tourism activities in the conventional trading village.

Visitors can enjoy various activities on Silk Street, Food Street, Ornamental Flower Street, Antique Street, and stalls selling handicraft products from Bat Trang Ceramic Village, Kim Lan Ceramic Village (Gia Lam District), Quat Dong Embroidery Village (Thuong Tin District), and Phu Vinh Bamboo and Rattan Weaving Village (Chuong My District).

There are also experiential tours and visits to historical and cultural sites, such as the Ho Chi Minh Memorial House, communal houses, pagodas, and ancestral temples. Visitors can learn about traditional silk weaving and experience weaving at Van Phuc Silk JSC, Nguyet Nam Silk, Mao Silk, Lan Son Silk, or Vun (Scrap) Art Cooperative.

According to Nguyen Van Du, Chairman of the Van Phuc Ward People's Committee and head of the organizing committee, preparations for the event are now complete.

He added that the entrance of Van Phuc Silk Street is splendidly and impressively decorated with the traditional colors of the "Silk Village" land.

The street features a vibrant and colorful array of silk lanterns stretching hundreds of meters, beautifully arranged spinning wheels, and paintings depicting the village's silk production process. In particular, a glass bridge is currently being installed to enhance the tourist experience.

Bui Manh Hiep, the leader of the Moc painting team in Van Phuc Ward, along with the young members, is currently completing a large painting in the flower garden in front of the village temple. "The 100m2 painting depicts the process of silk farming, from raising silkworms to producing silk in Van Phuc Village," he said.

"We have been working on this painting for four days, with contributions from teachers of Van Phuc Kindergarten and Quang Trung Kindergarten and residents," he added.

In addition to the activities of Culture and Tourism Week, the authorities and people of Van Phuc are persistently promoting the village's handicrafts and local tourism products, thus contributing to improving the livelihoods of local people.

Chairman Nguyen Van Du of the Van Phuc Ward People's Committee noted that since 2022, Van Phuc Silk Village has been incorporated into two tour itineraries. Notably, in 2023, the influx of tourists visiting Van Phuc has shown a substantial increase compared to the previous year.

Nguyen Thi Nguyet, owner of Minh Ngoc Silk Shop in Van Phuc Village, remarked, "The Silk Road draws a substantial number of tourists due to its exquisite decoration, providing great photo opportunities. Furthermore, tourists visit not only for exploration but also for shopping, more so than on regular days. As a result, my family is ramping up production to diversify our offerings and fulfill the heightened demand from tourists."

The residents of Van Phuc craft approximately 70 different varieties of silk, satin, brocade, and linen, each boasting a unique array of patterns. The village annually supplies the market with one million meters of these diverse silk products, which generates revenues exceeding VND100 billion (US$4 million).
