Can you spot the snow monsters?

@shun.rr854 on Instagram
Each winter a unique weather phenomenon turns trees on the Zao mountains into strange 'snow monsters' called juhyo.

Cold air on the upper slopes of the mountain freezes water droplets onto the trees, which get bigger and bigger throughout the season (December-March).

You can see these unique figures while skiing or snowboarding at Zao Onsen Ski Resort.

Non-skiers are encouraged to hire a private guide, or can hop on the Nightcruiser snowmobile to cruise the slopes in the evening and see them illuminated with colourful lights.

Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a 40-minute bus ride from Yamagata Station.

A GLIMPSE OF HOTEL LA GEMMA’S STUNNING INTERIOR

Hotel La Gemma is set to be Florence’s most talked about hotel opening in Spring 2023. This striking boutique property is located just moments from the famous Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Piazza della Repubblica.

Set within a stunning 18th-century palazzo, this stylish new 5* hotel will include a rather cool 1st-floor gourmet restaurant and a tranquil private spa located in the historic cellars of the palace. Most significantly, the striking interior design concept of this impressive new project looks set to attract guests who truly appreciate the art of contemporary design.
The interiors have been created to pay homage to the city’s stunning Cathedral, with the hotel’s eye-catching aesthetic drawing inspiration from the ’Duomo’s’ distinct colours and sculptural design elements. Hotel La Gemma’s interior reflects the beauty of the famous cathedral with a palette of vibrant greens, powder pinks, and gentle ivories alongside bold geometric patterns, opulent marbles, sumptuous textiles, and bespoke furnishings.

Rooms and suites give off an air of relaxed luxury which effortlessly exude old-school glamour. References to the Art-Deco era can be noted in the handcrafted king-size beds finished in muted shades of green and pink velvets, while a silk feature wall adds warmth and interest to the space. Ornate circular bedside tables provide a sense of contemporary opulence, while recessed backlit shelves add character and charm to the rooms.

Rooms are impeccably presented and finished with vibrant textiles, Italian bed linens, and bathrobes by Rivolta Carmignani. Marble bathrooms are furnished by Devon & Devon with ceramics by Gio Ponti. Complimentary products are by Votary whose Rosemary & Chia series is both elegant and naturally perfumed.

At Hotel La Gemma, the difference is most definitely in the detail. Here, a sense of joy and appreciation for Florentine life can be felt throughout the Hotel La Gemma experience: Designer in-room cocktail stations are filled with fine wines, spirits and mixers and the welcome gifts include mouth-watering artisan delicacies from local Florentine patisserie Leornardo. Each room features a smart workspace or desk, while intelligent lighting systems gently illuminate the wardrobes and storage spaces, making unpacking a simple pleasure.

A design enthusiast’s heaven, where the tiniest architectural elements have been thought through in the finest of detail. Hotel La Gemma offers the perfect combination of function and form, where 5* comfort takes luxury hospitality to another level of Florentine excellence.  www.lagemmahotel.com

From Trash to Tote: Thai Resort Welcomes Guests with Offer That’s Not Refuse

Guests checking in at the luxury beachfront resort of Banyan Tree Krabi are reducing their carbon footprint on southern Thailand’s marine environment from the moment they arrive.

Instead of the usual hotel “welcome pack”, visitors are presented with a novel tote bag that was created by local artisans using upcycled waste washed up on local beaches.

“There’s a fine difference between recycling and upcycling,” explained the hotel’s Sustainability Manager Thepsuda Loyjiw. “Recycling is when we save materials such as glass and plastic for general reuse; while upcycling is the art of taking waste products and reinventing them as something else.”

The “Souvenirs from the Sea” project is the brainchild of a local vendor who scours the shores around Krabi each morning, picking up debris and, with a keen artistic eye, selecting those items that can be cleaned, dried, and modified into safe, colourful, eco-friendly souvenirs for tourists.

Her partnership with Banyan Tree Krabi is proving to be a win-win situation for everyone.

“Guests invariably do a double-take when they receive the pouch with its fish and sea motifs,” said Tipwimon Rattanawongwan, a marine scientist who is the new Sustainability Coordinator at the resort. “But this immediately gives their Banyan Tree Host an opportunity to explain about our sustainability programs and eco-friendly policies. Our guests feel they are doing their bit; that they too are invested in the protection and conservation of the local environment.”

The project comes at a time when southern Thailand’s coastal environment is under the spotlight. Several islands and beaches have been closed in recent years due to the impact of tourism on coral and marine life, most notably Maya Bay where the Hollywood movie The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed. In recent years, a series of laws has been passed to protect Thailand’s famed sapphire seas and palm-fringed beaches, including bans on smoking, the feeding of marine life, wastewater dumping, fishing or anchoring on coral reefs, and new seafront construction at several popular beach destinations.

Banyan Tree Krabi’s recent sustainability initiatives include an Earth Day beach clean-up with guests as volunteers, and the introduction of Forest Bathing, a nature-based educational tour for guests, including children, to help raise awareness about environmental conservation and protecting local flora and fauna.

The 5-star property, located on tranquil Tubkaek Beach facing the uninhabited limestone islands of Than Bok Khorani Marine National Park, looks to follow in the gentle footprints of Banyan Tree Samui which in 2018 became the first hotel in Thailand to be awarded “Gold Certification” at a single-property level by EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism.

The Banyan Tree brand is known worldwide for its green policies and sustainability goals, exemplified by the group’s “Stay for Good” framework which assures visitors that the hotels are contributing responsibly to practical environmental initiatives, and ethical engagement with locally-infused community projects.

New Whitsundays Campaign Reveals The Action-Packed Wonders of The Whitsundays

While many people know that The Whitsundays provides the perfect flop and drop holiday, a new campaign launched last week, throws down the challenge to the holidaymaker who wants action and adventure, and other moments of wonder as part of their bucket-list Whitsundays experience.

Sailing, kayaking, snorkelling, diving and skydiving, The Whitsundays provides a holiday for everyone and this is the theme of the new iteration of the Wonders of The Whitsundays campaign, which was created by Wavemaker five years ago.

The Whitsundays has experienced record levels of visitation and spend this year and the new Wonders campaign is expected to drive further visitation and spend as the region aims for another record year.

Tourism Whitsundays Chief Executive Officer, Rick Hamilton said the campaign has evolved, incorporating an always-on approach to better work-in with operators. This will be crucial to the success of the campaign this year.

“The previous Wonders campaign wrapped up in late March 2022 and delivered over $4.8m in sales to operators – an amazing result considering occupancy in the region has been 70 per cent on average for the year. This campaign will focus on driving sales to the operators directly on our website with the best deals available in the periods when operators see a softening of bookings.

“Focusing on our tried-and-true markets of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland allows us to continue building awareness of The Whitsundays and the ease of accessibility by road, rail and air from these states,” Mr Hamilton said.

Wonders of The Whitsundays activity will roll out across out-of-home, content partnerships and social, display banners and search to maximise the reach of the campaign to audiences across Australia. The campaign will again use the voice of Siri, Karen Jacobson, to voice radio and Spotify ads about experiences available in The Whitsundays.

The Wonders of The Whitsundays campaign will run from today (25 January 2023) until March 2023 to fill potential need periods for operators.

With great offers available across island stays, snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, soaking up the sunshine on Whitehaven Beach, sailing through 74 island wonders, or experiencing the vibrant coastal towns of Airlie Beach and Bowen, there is an option for everyone wanting to do The Whitsundays.

Explore the Wonders of The Whitsundays and more via thewhitsundays.com.au.

This project received grant funding from the Australian Government under the Recovery for Regional Tourism program, an initiative of the $1 billion COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Fund, as well as funding from the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.

About Tourism Whitsundays: Tourism Whitsundays (TW) is the organisation responsible for destination marketing and visitor attraction for the Whitsunday region. Walk the Gulgong Symbol Trail

Gulgong Pioneers Museum. Credit: Visit NSW
The secret traveller's language was used internationally by the gypsies of Europe and carried by migrations to the hobos of America and the swaggies of Australia.

During the last Depression and in the Gold Rush Days, people travelling country roads in search of work, food or just a place to sleep the night, used the secret code of symbols via stones, sticks or scratches on the ground, to communicate "the lie of the land" to fellow swaggies.

Local identity and well known potter Chester Nealie was commissioned by the local council to research the symbols and make decorative paving tiles representing the secret language. Wander Gulgong's historic streets and see how many you can find and what they refer to. Tiles appear in Coronation Park and Mayne Street (from White to Herbert Street's). Look around and see if you can find some of the humorous locations like ones that say "dangerous drinking water" (outside the pubs).

The Gulgong Historic Walk booklet is a comprehensive walking guide to the town's historic buildings and includes the Henry Lawson Driving Trail and the Gulgong Cemetery Walk.

The Cemetery is on the southern edge of Gulgong and is accessible by foot. The booklet is available for a small cost at the Mudgee and Gulgong Visitor Information Centres and many outlets in Gulgong, and is an essential touring guide to this unique town.
