AIRPORTS OF THAILAND FORECASTS 50% FALL IN REVENUE, PASSENGERS

Airports of Thailand (AoT) said it expects passenger numbers and revenue to fall by 50% in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

AoT, which manages six airports including Bangkok’s main Suvarnabhumi, on Wednesday forecast a 50.7% year-on-year drop in revenue for its 2020 fiscal year and a 42.2% fall in 2021.

If a vaccine can be developed and distributed by July next year, the Thai economy can begin to recover after January 2022, then air traffic volumes could return to normal levels by October that year, state-owned AoT said in a statement.

It expects that by 2023, passenger numbers will reach 144.2 million and 902,000 flights, slightly above pre-crisis levels.

“Such forecasts are based on the assumption that a second wave of Covid-19 infections still strike different countries targeted for making bilateral agreements on (a) travel bubble with Thailand,” AoT said.

Thailand has not yet signed any agreements for a tourism or travel exchange with other countries.

AoT said it expects travel within Thailand, which on Tuesday approved a domestic tourism package worth 22.4 billion baht, to begin to recover in August and reach normal levels in October 2022.

Thailand’s aviation regulator suspended all commercial flights from entering the country since April.

Latitude Hotels launches ‘Latitude Gratitude’

LATTITUDE KAMPALA
The Latitude Hotels Group has launched ‘Latitude Gratitude’, a community investment initiative to support local neighbourhoods in which its hotels operate.

As the world tackles Coronavirus the consequences for already vulnerable economies and communities is stark. Health-care systems are rudimentary and the WHO estimates that only 15% of the population in Sub Saharan Africa has access to a basic hand washing facility of soap and water.

In November 2020 the group published its first Social Impact Report and on 2 May 202 it, launched ‘Latitude Gratitude’, to raise funds for their local communities. While the hotels have a history of supporting local initiatives and commitment to a variety of projects, this will be part of a new coordinated approach to community investment.

The Alderney Wildlife Trust

Alderney is the third largest and most northerly of the Channel Islands, located eight miles off the Normandy coast and a 15- minute flight from Guernsey.

One of the wildest places in the British Isles, the island is known for its rich and varied wildlife, including the rare blonde hedgehog, the largest population of Glanville Fritillary butterflies in the British Isles and huge colonies of seabirds, including puffins and storm petrels.

Its coastline is home to many special birdlife, including Peregrine, Buzzard, Raven & Dartford Warbler, while gannets and fulmars can be seen nesting on the rocks of les Etacs and Ortac along the Alderney coastline. The Alderney Wildlife Trust (AWT) was founded in 2002 by a group of Alderney residents to better understanding and preserving the island’s unique natural biodiversity. The AWT provides a range of activities, walks and tours throughout the year for residents and visitors to learn more about the island’s unique environments. From March to October, the AWT’s workboat runs seabird tours of Alderney’s coastline and, from April to October, there are weekly sunset walks to hunt for bats and Alderney’s blonde hedgehogs. Year-round there are bi-weekly conservation volunteering opportunities.

The Florida Keys Island Chain Has Reopened to Visitors

The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands stretching about 120 miles off the southern tip of the US state of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. They’re known as a destination for fishing, boating, snorkeling and scuba diving.

The southernmost city of Key West is famous for Duval Street’s many bars, Mallory Square’s nightly Sunset Celebration and the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Reopening measures included the removal of health checkpoints on two roads into the island chain, and the suspension of airport health screenings, except for passengers on nonstop flights from designated COVID-19 hotspot states. Keys lodging properties, restaurants, beaches, attractions, watersports and other businesses have implemented safeguards.

These include enhanced sanitising; reduced occupancy limits; required social distancing and the wearing of masks and barriers or increased space between seating areas and restaurant tables. The Keys tourism council's website highlights protective health practices for travellers to adopt while in the destination, intended to safeguard themselves and others. The Keys tourism industry supports about 26,500 jobs, according to a recent analytic study, employing about 45 per cent of the 125-mile island chain’s workforce.

Museum taking the inside out during extended closure period

Townsville’s award winning Museum of Tropical Queensland will remain closed until early 2021 as it undergoes major internal and external construction works.

The building roof works are part of a $6 million project, funded by the Queensland Government, to repair damage from the 2019 monsoonal event and to restore the iconic sail roof on the Flinders Street Building constructed in 2000.

Queensland Museum Network CEO Dr Jim Thompson said the new roof was a well-received investment for the museum and the city during COVID-19.

“Museum of Tropical Queensland has been a welcoming place for thousands of visitors over the years and although the museum will be physically closed to the public, visitors can still experience the wondrous collection and objects online during this time,” Dr Thompson said.

Minister for Science and Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the works would improve the building’s structure and create local employment equivalent to 30 full time jobs.

“Museum of Tropical Queensland will continue to engage with the North Queensland community and schools over the coming months.” Minister Enoch said.

“During the COVID-19 closure, Queensland Museum Network launched a Museum at Home website to provide online learning and collections from home and the digital platform will continue to allow museum visitors to experience exhibitions, hear about latest research, and learn about our collections, activities and resources.

“Museum staff, including some of our top scientists, will connect with locals and students virtually and in person throughout the remainder of 2020 and early 2021.”

The State Collection held at Museum of Tropical Queensland will be completely secure during the roof operations. This includes safeguarding one the largest coral collections in the world; a biodiversity library of more than 50,000 specimens; the State Maritime Collection with at least   9,000 objects from 25 shipwrecks along the Queensland coast and the North Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collection with objects dating back to the 1800s.

Once completed in early 2021, there will be no change to the roof appearance with the iconic curved roof alongside Ross Creek remaining the same – both inside and out.

Access to Wickham St, between the Queensland Building, and the Ross Creek side of the museum including the grassed area and boardwalk along the water will continue to be closed to the public during the works period.

Visitors and Annual Pass holders will be kept up-to-date via the museum’s social media channels and information about the works can be found here on Museum of Tropical Queensland website.

People can keep up to date with the building works by following Museum of Tropical Queensland’s social media channels.

Queensland Museum Network will be reopening across its network as part of the staged easing of COVID-19 restrictions. More information will be provided via the Queensland Museum website and social media channels.

AIRBNB BOOKINGS RISE BY 13% AS DOMESTIC TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS IN THAILAND EASED

PHOTO: Big.tiny.belly on Unsplash
Airbnb Thailand has reported a 13% increase in domestic bookings year-on-year, as travel restrictions across the country are lifted and Thais and expats begin to move around more. Domestic holiday markets in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea are also reporting similar increases. Airbnb says that between June 5-7 and for the first time since February, the company recorded a global increase in bookings.

In Thailand, the most popular destinations in the last month include Pattaya, Hua Hin, Petchaburi and big cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai. However, 45% of bookings were for non-urban areas.

Kum Hong Siew, Airbnb’s Regional Director for the Asia-Pacific region, says the surge in new bookings is a positive sign for Thailand’s domestic tourism sector.

“We are already seeing early positive signs of domestic travel getting ready to make a comeback, driven by locals booking holidays that are closer to home. This latest data reinforces our belief that travellers increasingly are looking for more local, authentic and affordable experiences.

“Tourism is a key driver of economic growth in Thailand and it will play an important role in overall recovery. We are committed to working hand in hand with governments, tourist agencies, communities and other key local stakeholders in Thailand to help restore travel in a responsible way that economically benefits local citizens and small businesses, paving the way towards tourism’s much-needed recovery.”

The Red Sea
The Red Sea Development Company has published details of its plans for the locating of its Red Sea project on Saudi Arabia’s west coast. The area includes an archipelago of more than 90 islands along with mountain canyons, dormant volcanoes and ancient cultural and heritage sites.

The project will see villas, restaurants and hotel arrival points for two hyper-luxury hotels and one luxury hotel on Sheybarah South and Ummahat Al Shaykh islands. The location of these will be key to optimising the protection of the rich coral habitat and the local ecology The first phase of the development, completed by the end of 2022, will include 14 luxury hotels offering 3,000 rooms across five islands and two inland locations. Masters of Malaysian Cuisine Join Forces to Promote Malaysian Food to the World via Live Cooking Videos

On 27 June, a coalition of eight Malaysian cuisine masters based in different countries around the world will begin a series of monthly Live cooking videos to showcase Malaysian flavours to a global audience.

This Food Fame initiative in partnership with Tourism Malaysia is the first campaign of its kind, and it's aimed at inspiring people to cook restaurant-quality Malaysian and Malaysian-inspired dishes in their home kitchen.

Experience has shown that despite the popularity of Malaysian food among those who have tried it, most people find it difficult to navigate the ingredients and cooking techniques involved in producing quality Malaysian meals at home.

These live videos which will run for 7 consecutive days with a different chef scheduled each day, will aim to make cooking Malaysian food fun, easy and accessible for all cooks regardless of skill level or where they're located.

Each of the chefs in Masters Of Malaysian Cuisine brings a different approach and specialty to the mix, and viewers are encouraged to tune in to every session so they benefit from the combined knowledge of these giants of their respective niches.

Street food expert and Masters of Malaysian Cuisine member Jackie M believes that awareness and education coupled with a big dose of entertainment is the best way to encourage people to introduce Malaysian flavours into the kitchen.

“Food brings people together, and Malaysian food, with its unique mix of influences from the different ethnic groups in Malaysia, is a perfect example of how our different racial and cultural backgrounds can result in a cuisine that's unparalleled in its variety and depth. We are so obsessed with our food that we greet each other by asking if we have eaten!”

The eight Masters Of Malaysian Cuisine are a mix of some of the world's best known names in Malaysian cuisine along with some hot new talents:

Earthwatch in Andora

Andorra is a small principality situated between France and Spain in the Pyrenees mountains. It is home to an array of colourful flora, trees and wildlife that are at risk as a result of climate change that has already begun to alter the landscape. To prevent further disruption to this alpine world, researchers need to understand the extent of impact of climate change and human encroachment on wildlife in Andorra in order to create sustainable solutions. Earth Watch, an organisation that connects people and scientists to protect the planet and invites participants to join a project to help understand the mountain ecosystem and the Pyrenean plants and wildlife.

The expedition offers the opportunity to have a hands-on experience in measuring and researching the changes in Andorra’s alpine world and to what extent human activity has impacted this. Activities will include weighing and measuring small animals, finding the Boreal Owl and other birds such as Coal Tit and Crested Tit by visiting their nest boxes and testing their excrement to analyse the DNA in their diet.

The research aims to gain a further understanding on the ecosystem. In particular, which species are involved, why are some more present in some areas than others and how do different life stages of each species intertwine to create a functioning ecosystem. The expedition experience also includes accommodation - Hotel Bringué in the Valley of Ordino – as well as breakfast, a packed lunch and dinner.

Tourism industry will change ‘greatly’ in post COVID-19: tourism minister

Myanmar’s tourism industry will change tremendously in the post-COVID-19 period, said Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism Ohn Maung.

Trying not to harm public security under a new normal situation, the ministry in close cooperation with tourism-related associations will be taking step-by-step measures in accord with the roadmap to revive the tourism industry, he said.

The country’s tourism was greatly impacted by the Covid-19 outbreak, so three strategies will be adopted for its revival, the minister added.

The three strategies are survival, reopening and relaunching. Each of them has four tasks.

The survival stage started in April, the reopening stage will start in June and the final state in August.

The ministry will take measures to establish travel bubbles first with neighbouring Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam and then with Japan, Korea and China so as to revive its tourism industry in Asia. When the initial measures are in place, international travellers will be invited to fully revive the tourism industry, the minister said.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, Myanmar started stay-home measures in April blocking the entry of foreign visitors. About 400,000 foreign travellers visited the country in January. But the number was less than 100 in April. The Covid-19 impact also led to closures of hotels and restaurants.

Tripadvisor Launches ‘Travel Safe’ Tools, Making It Easy for Travelers to Find Important Health and Safety Information About Hotels and Restaurants Reopening During COVID-19

Tripadvisor®, the world’s largest travel platform, today launched a new suite of “Travel Safe” tools to help consumers find, filter for, and validate health and safety information to feel more confident with their future travel choices across town and around the world. Travel Safe features are available in all 49 markets where Tripadvisor operates, and more than 13,850 properties have already activated the feature set.

A recent study* from Tripadvisor found that for consumers thinking about future travel:
     ● More than 9 out of 10 (92%) said cleanliness is the most important factor in selecting accommodations.
     ● More than 8 in 10 (84%) said cleanliness or sanitization certificates are important when booking a travel experience.
     ● Nearly 8 in 10 (79%) said it’s important to publicly display compliance to government safety standards.

How Travel Safe helps travelers and business owners:
For travelers:

     ● Health & safety checklists: Leveraging expertise from public health organizations and industry associations across the globe, hotel and restaurant owners can share safety measures directly on their Tripadvisor listing. These include sanitation procedures, mask-wearing guidelines, social distancing policies, and more.
     ● Search filter: A new filter allows users to easily find which hotels and restaurants are taking these added safety precautions.
     ● Traveler reviews: New review submission form prompts allow users to validate safety measures and share their experiences with other travelers.
     ● Q&A with business owners: If users still have questions, they can directly message business owners about their safety measures (or anything else).

For owners:
     ● Businesses can now select safety measures they have in place at their property by accessing the checklist in their Tripadvisor management center (for free).
     ● The checklist also enables properties to submit a text description of the steps they are taking to protect customers, including links back to safety information on their own websites.

“If we want to get the world traveling again, the safety needs of consumers must be appreciated and recognized as the biggest hurdle to closing the confidence gap created by this pandemic,” said Lindsay Nelson, chief experience and brand officer, Tripadvisor, Inc. “With the launch of Travel Safe, we’re allowing owners to showcase how they’re putting health and safety at the forefront to protect their staff and future customers. As always, by submitting reviews, our hundreds of millions of members will be the best check and balance to ensure these businesses are responsibly abiding by their policies.”

“As travel restrictions ease, hospitality businesses must recognize the changing expectations from consumers around safety and cleanliness,” said Kanika Soni, chief commercial officer, Tripadvisor, Inc. “That is why Travel Safe will be such a vital tool. It will provide consumers with the information and reassurance they need when they travel, while allowing businesses to build trust by highlighting the concrete steps they are taking to keep their customers safe.”

THAILAND ‘TRAVEL BUBBLE’ OPENING TO FOREIGNERS OF BILATERAL COOPERATION IN TOURISM

Initially, the travel bubble will reopen the country to about
1,000 foreign entrepreneurs and patients seeking
medical service appointments in Thailand a day.

After implementing the fourth phase of easing of anti-COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, the Ministries of Tourism and Sports, Public Health, Interior and Foreign Affairs will propose a travel bubble plan to the government’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Wednesday (June 17).

The Tourism and Sports Minister, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, expressed his confidence in Thailand’s tourism sector and the country’s ability to deal with the COVID-19 situation. The travel bubble will reopen the country to international visitors, limiting visitors to those from countries where the outbreak is well controlled. It is bilateral cooperation in tourism, and many countries around the world are also interested in this concept. It is already approved in principle by the CCSA. The various ministries are now looking into implementation and negotiations with selected countries, various protocols and precautionary measures. The issue will be proposed to the CCSA this Wednesday.

In the initial stage, the travel bubble will reopen the country to foreign entrepreneurs and patients seeking medical service appointments in Thailand. The country is expected to welcome about 1,000 foreigners a day. If it works out well, more groups will be allowed to enter the country. The travel bubble will not impose the 14-day quarantine, but other measures have been prepared to ensure public safety.
