The Adge Apartment Hotel has the Edge

Adge Apartment Hotel
Modern, funky, fab are all words that could describe The Adge Apartment Hotel in Sydney. The Adge is not your normal run-of-the-mill hotel. In many ways it has the edge over other hotels in Sydney.

I had the privilege of staying recently with my family at The Adge for several nights and discovered all of the delights it offers.

It is conveniently located in Surry Hills, just a short walk East from the CBD of Sydney. We travelled by train from our home in country NSW, so just walked the short distance to The Adge from Central Station. If we drove we could have used the carpark at The Adge, or we could have caught a public bus and got off at an adjacent bus stop.

The Adge Apartment Hotel is boutique in size, in that it is only seven stories high, with reception and lobby on the ground floor and guest accommodation on the the next six floors. What strikes you in this new hotel, built in 2012, is the modern cartoonish artworks in the lobby.

The guest rooms are more than just rooms. They are large two bedroom, two bathroom guest suites generously sized at 60 sq metres.  There are also split level loft penthouse suites of 70 sq metres. All the suites have Eastside or Cityscape panoramic views through the floor to ceiling windows.

There are only 12 suites at The Adge, with two suites on each floor. This results in quite short hallways without hordes of people roaming up and down talking loudly disturbing your night's slumber.

Each suite is bold and individual in character. Just like the other suites, ours featured an open-plan lounge and dining area and a fully-equipped kitchen with European Miele and Smeg refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher. The full-size refrigerator was a funky lime green retro curved edge design that would have looked good in  our home. There was also a laundry, with both washing and drying machines, which I did not use in our short stay.

A much appreciated welcome gift was waiting for us in our suite -  plate of selected cheese, olives and crackers for us to enjoy. This was in addition to the bath fizz sweet peach bath bomb sitting on our bed. We were impressed with how bright, spotlessly clean and spacious our suite was. The most obvious style statement in our suite was the bright, striped carpet. Just right to perk up our stay in Sydney.

Our suite had an abundance of flat screen Samsung TV's to watch. Not only was there a large smart TV in the living room, each of the two bedrooms had there own TV mounted on the wall. Free WiFi was available in the suite and lobby, so each person was able to connect their laptop and smart phone.

There were two separate bathrooms in our suite, so this meant no queueing up. The master bedroom had the added convenience of a full ensuite with a bath. Both bathrooms were well stocked with a quality range of Appelles Black Label bath and body amenities. The beds were large and very comfortable with crisp clean linen that enabled us to have a good nights sleep after our hectic days. Each night our turndown attendant prepared our beds for us, left yummy chocolates on the bed, and provided the following days weather forecast on the back of a postcard with a photo of the hotel artwork and a quotable quote on the front for us to think about.

An outside balcony offered wonderful views towards the lights of the city, stretching from Central Railway to Circular Quay. We could even see the top of the sails of the Opera House, which were lit up for the Vivid Festival.

The Baccomatto Osteria restaurant serves fine Italian food & wine and serves Breakfast from 6.30am, lunch from midday Thursday to Sunday and dinner seven nights from 5pm. (The menu can be seen here.) The Raita Noda Restaurant serves omakase (chef's selection) in a 10-course degustation for 8 guests at a time. It is open from 7pm Monday to Saturday.

It is the little extras that make a hotel a great hotel. Ziggy's 'Room Service' offers in-room hair styling. There is a Personal Grocery Shopper service, where prior to arrival, or during the stay, guests get can select a range of groceries from the local Duffy’s supermarket and a variety of breakfast and dinner packs from Hudson Meats. Room Service is available 24 hours a day with a menu offering a wide variety of dishes for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

You know a hotel is good when it has received many awards. Some recent awards The Adge Apartment Hotel has received include:
  • the World Luxury Hotel Award for Luxury Design Hotel in 2014, and has been nominated for the 2015 finals
  • Trip Advisor certificates of excellence in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
  • Travellers’ Choice Top 25 Hotels in Australia for Top Hotels for Service, Top Hotels for Families, Top Luxury Hotels and Top Small Hotels
  • Travellers’ Choice Top 25 Hotels in South Pacific for Top Hotels for Families, Top Luxury Hotels and Top Small Hotels

In these days of social consciousness it is good to know that The Adge Apartment Hotel is a sponsor of this year’s Tour De Cure Australia which raises awareness and funds to cure cancer.

My only regret about staying at The Adge Apartment Hotel is that we were so busy we were did not spend much time in our suite. I would have liked more time to just sit down and relax so as to enjoy all the comforts our suite. During our short stay we saw a musical at a theatre, attended an exhibition at an art gallery, and ventured out till late each night viewing the Vivid Festival lights.

I would like to go back to The Adge Apartment Hotel and spend more time exploring the local area, as there are many fine restaurants, coffee shops, cafes, wine bars, clothing and home wares shops nearby, particularly in the vibrant Crown and Oxford Street precincts. I would have liked to walk around the area surrounding The Adge Apartment Hotel on foot to take in all the remarkable historic buildings, such as the Crown Street Public School with its impressive Victorian Gothic facade built in 1879.

The motto of The Adge Apartment Hotel is "Dare to be different". This is evident in the design, decor and services provided in this amazing hotel in Sydney. Next time you are in Sydney dare to be different and drop in to have a look at this boutique home away from home.
