Stomp - the International Sensation is Back in Sydney!

Stomp
Stomp - what an adrenalin pumping, exhilarating show!

I was fortunate to see the opening night performance of Stomp this week at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney. I usually go to see musicals at the Capitol Theatre, so this was a pleasant change. Stomp is not a musical, or opera, or drama. It is a very talented bunch of six guys and 2 girls who do amazing feats of producing rhythmic sounds with there hands and feet.

There is no band or orchestra for Stomp. All the musical beats and tunes are done with the hands and feet of the performers.

Stomp
A variety of everyday props are utilised to tap out varying beats. There are brooms, bags, tin lids, inner tubes,  kitchen sinks, pipes, supermarket trolleys, and drums. Some are tapped softly, some hammered loudly, some slow, and some very fast.

Most of the action takes place on the stage floor, but some of it is also seen on the rear wall of the stage as performers are suspended in front of various metallic objects that are drummed.

The skilled performers make all there choreographed tapping and stomping movements look so easy. However, their complex moves need split precision timing as they work together as a team on the stage. Their bodies must be totally exhausted at the end of each show.

Stomp
Apart from enjoying listening to the varying sounds made on stage, the best part of Stomp is the comedy elements of the show. Each of the eight performers personalities comes through, with light relief offered particularly by one of the men. There are many moments during the show when laughter can be heard arising from the audience

Another standout feature of Stomp is the audience participation that is encouraged. At different parts of the show, the audience is invited to join in with the hand clapping and foot stomping. It takes a few attempts to get the timing right, but with persistence, there is some resemblance of a tune heard from the occupants of the theatre seats.

Stomp
Stomp is suitable for ages to enjoy. Some of the loudest laughs on the night could be heard from the children in the audience. It was fun to hear some of their off the cuff remarks as they yelled them out to the actors on the stage.

The just under 2-hour Stomp performance is captivating from start to finish. It consists of many segments, just like a sketch review show. Take note - there is no interval, so stock up with supplies from the candy bar and drinks bar before the show commences.

I was accompanied to Stomp by a new arrival from Europe who had little knowledge of the English language. However, apart from a few "hi's", there was no dialogue in the show so he had no trouble appreciating all the action on the stage. A person with no knowledge at all of English could enjoy all of Stomp with no language barrier.

Stomp is currently being performed in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre just until 5 August 2018, so you will have to act quickly to get some tickets see the show.
