CHINA TO FURTHER PROMOTE ‘RED TOURISM’

China will continue to both promote ‘red tourism’ and ban any elements of poor taste surrounding it, cultural officials said on Monday.

The term relates to a subset of tourism in which people visit former Communist revolutionary bases.

Liu Yuzhu, head of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, said at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office that China has over 33,000 registered revolutionary sites – 477 of which are key national cultural relic protection units.

Rao Quan, an official from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, revealed that China recently issued guidelines it hopes will develop more tours and enrich the cultural connotations of red tourism, as well as improving its quality.

“Any vulgar factors shall be strictly banned from red tourism, as we hope tourists can learn the history and culture while feeling the spirits of revolutionary martyrs,” said Rao.
