An official with the Chinese province of Yunnan has said that Cambodia and the province have enjoyed many benefits through current policies, but added that new opportunities will be created through more cooperation in different sectors such as tourism and science and technology.

During a dinner with about 50 media representatives from a dozen countries, Tian Huqing, deputy director of the Information Office with the Yunnan provincial government, said due to Yunnan’s geographical location, the province is able to offer great opportunities to neighbours be an integral part of China’s growth.

Mr Tian said that Yunnan plays a crucial role in the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation initiative, which in itself has become a pivotal point in connecting China with Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Indian Ocean.

He said that a connection between China and the greater region provides a great drive for economic, cultural and historical development.

“Yunnan is a border province, and it serves as a gateway to Southeast Asia and South Asia as the Belt and Road initiative progresses,” Mr Tian said. “Yunnan is building itself into China’s new round of opening up – to take advantage of this opportunity, a series of events are being held, such as the 25th China Kunming Import and Export Commodities Fair and the 13th China-South Asia Business Forum.”

He added that Yunnan’s main exports are hydroelectricity, which is connected by high voltage transmission lines to Laos and Vietnam, and through the Asean power grid to Cambodia.

The province of Yunnan contains an abundant amount of natural resources, rich historical legacy and vibrant cultural heritage and a variety of ethnicities living side-by-side.

In regards to Cambodia-Yunnan relations, the China Science and Technology Museum (CSTM) signed a cooperation agreement with the Union of Youths Federation of Cambodia in Phnom Penh in early June.

Also, the museum is planning to hold an exhibition tour in Cambodia titled “Experiencing Science, Enlighten Innovation”, scheduled to begin in October until its conclusion in 2021.
