China to Build Two Vista-class Luxury Cruise Ships in Shanghai

China’s first homegrown luxury cruise vessels will be built at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, with delivery expected in 2022. Carnival Corp. signed a memorandum of understanding with China’s largest shipbuilder China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC), China Investment Corp, Italian cruise shipbuilding giant Fincantieri, CSSC Cruise Technology Development Co Ltd, and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co Ltd for the two 133,500-ton Vista class luxury cruise vessels.

The agreement was announced at the 11th annual China Cruise Shipping and International Cruise Expo in Tianjin, China.

Chinese cruise passengers reached 1.11 million in 2015, up 50 percent over 2014, and surpassing the one million mark for the first time.

More than 4.5 million Chinese consumers are expected take a cruise by 2020; the number is expected to reach 10 million by 2030.
