BROADWAY SHINES BRIGHTER THAN EVER IN NEW YORK CITY

—Highlights from the 2016–2017 Broadway Season Including Iconic Revivals and Celebrity Talent—

There has been no better time to enjoy New York City’s Broadway than now during the 2016–2017 season. From long-running musicals and classic revivals to shows featuring celebrity talent and movie-to-stage adaptations, the Great White Way offers more diverse entertainment than ever before.

In the 2016–2017 season, performances will vary from famous Broadway revivals, including Cats and Hello, Dolly! with Bette Midler, to film adaptations and leading roles held by recognized on-screen talent. For instance, audiences can expect performances from Cate Blanchett, Diane Lane, Glenn Close and others, as well as new musical adaptations of Anastasia and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Cats

Cats, one of Broadway’s longest-running musicals, has returned after a 16-year hiatus. Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and adapted from T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the beloved musical gives a window into the secret lives of felines and is one of the biggest hits in theatrical history. The musical recently welcomed viral sensation Grumpy Cat to the stage as the first real cat to perform in Cats.catsthemusical.com.

The Cherry Orchard

An adaptation of the classic 1904 play has returned to Broadway starring Diane Lane, who made her Broadway debut as a child in the 1977 production of the play. Chicago

The longest-running American musical in Broadway history is Chicago, which is celebrating its 20th year on Broadway in 2016. A universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz, the incredible musical even spawned the 2002 Academy Award–winning film. Cirque du Soleil Paramour

The latest performance from the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil, Paramour follows the tale of a young actress forced to choose between love and art in the glamorous world of Golden Age Hollywood. The Front Page

A revival of the classic 1928 comedy, The Front Page, starring Nathan Lane, John Slattery and John Goodman, is set in the world of the Chicago newspaper business. Les Liaisons Dangereuses

A tale of sex, power and betrayal, Les Liaisons Dangereuses follows two ex-lovers who scheme to ruin the reputation of an innocent young aristocrat. Starring Liev Schreiber, the play has a limited run through January 22, 2017. liaisonsbroadway.com.

Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812

Oh, Hello on Broadway

Waitress

A new musical based upon the popular movie from 2007, Waitress follows a young woman and expert pie maker as she weighs her small-town commitments against freedom and recognition. Anastasia

Inspired by the successful 20th Century Fox animated film from 1997, Anastasia is an adventure-filled story of a young woman attempting to discover the mystery of her past. Following previews in March 2017, the musical will open in April. anastasiabroadway.com.

A Bronx Tale

Based on the acclaimed one-man show that inspired the 1993 film of the same name, the musical inspired by the streets of the Bronx in the 1960s is returning to Broadway. Scheduled to open in December 2016 (previews begin in November), A Bronx Tale follows a young man as he is torn between his father and his mob boss, and is directed by Academy Award winner Robert De Niro, who also directed the film.abronxtalethemusical.com.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Come From Away

The new musical Come From Away follows the town of Gander, Newfoundland following September 11, 2001 and is based on actual events of when diverted planes landed in the small Canadian town. The Glass Menagerie

Two-time Academy Award-winner Sally Field will star in the Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. The drama, referred to as a memory play, will open March 9, 2017 for a limited run through July 2, 2017. glassmenagerieonbroadway.com.

Hello, Dolly!

Legendary performer Bette Midler returns to Broadway to star in the revival of Hello, Dolly! The musical comedy based on New York City in the 1890s will open April 2017. hellodollyonbroadway.com.

Miss Saigon

An additional Broadway revival, Miss Saigon, is returning for the first time since 2001. The musical takes place in 1975 during the final days of the American occupation of Saigon, and is a dramatic love story between an American soldier and a young Vietnamese woman. The Present

The Present features the Sydney Theatre Company Australian cast including Cate Blanchett in her Broadway debut. Present Laughter

Academy Award and two-time Tony Award winner Kevin Kline will star in Present Laughter in April 2017 after a decade long absence from Broadway. Playing a limited-engagement run, the comedic play follows a self-obsessed actor in the midst of a midlife crisis and first premiered on Broadway in 1946. Website forthcoming.

Six Degrees of Separation

An original drama that first debuted on Broadway in 1990 and spurred a popular 1993 film, Six Degrees of Separation will return as a revival play in April 2017. Following a group of wealthy New Yorkers who are tricked by a con artist, the show will star Allison Janney for its limited 15-week engagement. Website forthcoming.

Sunset Boulevard

Following in the revival trend, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award–winning Best Musical Sunset Boulevard will return to Broadway in February 2017 with Glenn Close in the lead role. War Paint

Starring two-time Tony Award-winning actresses Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole War Paint is a new musical about two cosmetic business titans in the heat of a rivalry in 20th century. The show will open in April 2017. Website forthcoming.
