Grigoryan Brothers: The Seasons

Two of Australia’s finest guitarists, ARIA award-winning Slava Grigoryan and the virtuosic Leonard Grigoryan, will take on the Russian piano classic The Seasons in one stellar performance at City Recital Hall Angel Place on Saturday 6 April at 7.30pm, which will also see them perform a selection of their favourite compositions from around the world.

The Seasons, a 12-movement composition written for solo piano by iconic Russian composer Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky, has been specially arranged for two guitars by Slava and Leonard’s father, Edward Grigoryan.

“The Seasons means a lot to us,” Slava Grigoryan said.
“Our father spent many years transcribing the work for two guitars and it’s just so incredible to finally be sharing this great music with audiences.”

Edward Grigoryan’s arrangement is nothing short of stunning, retaining what makes the piece a masterpiece while presenting it in a totally different setting and giving it a new voice.

Slava and Leonard will perform highlights from The Seasons, a series of twelve movements characterising the twelve months of the year, commissioned to be printed as a monthly instalment for readers of the magazine Nouvellist in 1876.

Slava and Leonard will also perform a selection of their favourite pieces – compositions from around the world and pieces that display their improvisational skills. These include four evocative movements from the Suite Retratos by the legendary Radames Gnattali, a brand new untitled work by one of their biggest heroes, Ralph Towner, a new rearrangement of William Lovelady’s Incantation No.2, Leonard Grigoryan’s Distance, This Time and Fantasy on a theme by William Lawes by Slava Grigoryan.
