Swim, Bike and Run in ‘The Century Tuna Triathlon 5i50 Series’ in the Philippines.

Triathlon is the fastest growing sport in the world, especially so in the Philippines. The inaugural Century Tuna 5i50 Triathlon Series will be held on June 24, 2012 at Subic Bay, Philippines. Here the world will see hospitality, ingenuity, and beautiful sceneries. No doubt participants, visitors, families and friends will not only say “it’s more fun in the Philippines” but also proclaim “it’s more fun to swim, bike, run in the Philippines.”

Other Triathlons in the Philippines have been very popular. For Example, the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines in Cebu filled up registration seven whole months before the August 5, 2012 race day. Word has gone around the multi-sport world that the Philippines throws a great show.

The Olympic-distance Century Tuna 5i50 race will comprise a 1.5k swim, 40k bike, and 10k run. It will be held within SBMA (Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority), a former U.S. Naval base, one of the two former major military bases of the United States in the Philippines, the other being Clark Airfield, which were both reverted back to the home country by the Americans in the early Nineties. Triathletes who join can say they have swum where battleships used to be, in majestic Subic Bay surrounded by breathtaking mountains. These mountains are breathtaking too on the bike leg because this race will feature some vicious climbs. But true to most run legs in Philippine Tri-races, the 10k run route will be lined with spectators, giving that extra needed boost to complete the required 51.5 kilometers total.

The title sponsor is Century Tuna, the leading tuna brand in the Philippines. Other sponsors are Alaska Milk, Summit Water, Gatorade, LBC, 2XU, Timex, Prudential Guarantee, and media partners Philippine Star and Multisport Magazine. The Century Tuna 5i50 Triahtlon Series Philippines, the first in South East Asia, is staged and organized by Sunrise Events, Inc., led by two-time Ford Ironman World Championship finisher Fred Uytengsu.

The Philippines is more than just a fantastic triathlon destination. It has a rich history, where a majority of past heritage sites centered around 300 years of Spanish rule. Contemporary lifestyles are sophisticated and cosmopolitan, where major urban centers have superb international cuisine, complete shopping experiences, and the night life is unbeatable. So after the race, and the awesome loot bag, 5i50ers should try to stay a few more days because is it is safe to say: Post-race recovery – it is more fun in the Philippines.

Fred Uytengsu,: the Chairman of the Century Tuna 5i50 Triathlon Series, has written this letter in support of this Great Triathlon.

Mabuhay! Welcome to the Century Tuna 5i50 Philippines website. We are very excited to be able to host this event.

After three years of successfully staging the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines and the Alaska Ironkids Philippines, we are very pleased that Sunrise Events has been awarded by the World Triathlon Corporation the rights to stage the 5i50 Series. The 5i50 series is the Olympic Distance brand of WTC.

Our aim with this event is to encourage even more people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and embrace multisport training and racing. While we recognize that people may have an Ironman or Ironman 70.3 event as a “bucket list” item, we also realize that you need to start somewhere and this event does exactly that. The distance is still challenging for the novice triathlete and we hope to encourage many individuals to start with this distance. As more and more people seek a healthier lifestyle, triathlon is well positioned to attract many new participants. One way of encouraging this is by offering relays. I am pleased WTC has agreed to this and we will have several categories in the relay division. We believe that by offering relays, we will end up getting full fledged triathletes from this group as these participants will discover the joy and challenge of completing all three disciplines.

At the same time, seasoned triathletes will enjoy the standard distance as a way to improve on their speed and add yet another race to their calendar.

We are also pleased to announce that Subic Bay has also agreed to be our host venue for 2012 until 2014. Although Subic Bay has been host to many multi sport events, we will make it our challenge to make the 5i50 another world class production.

We are working closely with our partners and sponsors to ensure you have a comfortable and unique experience that will encourage you to return year after year and hopefully get you to have your triathlete friends come as well.

Thank you for your interest and we look forward to seeing you at the finish line.

Best regards, Wilfred Steven Uytengsu
, President, Sunrise Events Inc.
