Gold was discovered in 1849 in California's Gold Country. It is perfect any time of year to visit this area of America with the state's temperate climate.  But to step back in history or experience that small town feeling, here are some unique and notable events to consider when making plans to visit California in June this year.

Named by Outside Magazine is one of the top camps in the country, Shaffer's High Sierra Camp operates overnight summer camps from one to seven weeks for youth age 8-17 with an emphasis on noncompetitive, team-based wilderness adventure. Nevada City Bike Classic

One of America's top cycling events celebrates its 52nd anniversary this year and many of the nation's top cyclists are expected to be on hand in historic downtown Nevada City.  It is the oldest and largest bike race on the West Coast, and the second-oldest race in the nation.  Historic Nevada City is draped with flags and bunting and provides a colorful backdrop as cyclists whiz through the downtown area, spokes flashing and crowds cheering.   Action begins at 1:00 p.m. and the last cyclist is seen about six hours later.  http://www.nevadacitychamber.com/blog/nevada-city-events/nevada-city-bicycle-classic
