Korea is The Special Events Capital of Asia in 2012

Korea will be in the world spotlight with many special events scheduled to take place around the country in 2012. Korea’s mega event this year is the Expo 2012 Yeosu with more than 100 countries participating and eight million visitors expected.  There are free tourist shuttle buses on offer to foreign visitors, free one night’s accommodation if you stay 3/4 nights at select hotels in Korea.  And to move you around the country superfast, Korea’s  KTX trains are offering up to 30% discount on main lines.

Jinhae Naval Port Festival
Along with the attraction of Expo 2012 Yeosu, there are numerous special events being held in Korea this year including the Jinhae Naval Port Festival event (April 1-10) famous for the stunning cherry blossom trees, an International Peace and Life Festival (May 19-21) in Chuncheon, the Hallyu Dream Festival (September 21-23) in the ancient city of Gyeongju where K-Pop events and concerts will take place.  

Korea Food Festival
For lovers of Korean cuisine the Korea Food Festival (October 18-22) will lure Korean food lovers to Jeonju city, the food capital of the country.  A massive fireworks festival event held in Busan (October 26-27) features extravagant fireworks accompanied by music and videos and the possibility to meet your favourite Korean movie and K-Pop stars. 

Jeju Olle Walking Festival
On Jeju Island, off Korea’s south coast the Jeju Olle Walking Festival will take place from October 31 to November 3.  Walkers from Korea and around the world will join the festival to enjoy Jeju Island’s unique culture and beautiful natural wonders.  Jeju Island was named last year as one of the ‘New7Wonders of Nature and the island is the only place in the world with three UNESCO certifications.

Australia Pavilion
Expo 2012 Yeosu will be a big drawcard for Korea this year and will include an Australia Pavilion.  Expo 2012 Yeosu is an international exposition centred on the theme of ‘ocean’ and ‘coast’.  It will contribute to finding a brighter future for humankind by highlighting the importance of achieving co-prosperity of the sea and humans and provide the vision for building a green economy that keeps the ocean healthy through clean technologies.

It will also be a culturally stimulating expo offering a series of inspiring programs with over four hundred programs and 8,000 cultural performances taking place over entire ninety-three day period.  It will feature large-scale events such as the state-of-the-art night multi-media show, world class performances and concerts of popular singers from Korea and around the world.

Expo 2012 Big O Area
The Big-O will be the centrepiece of the Expo where the nightly multi-media show will take place providing a dazzling display of laser lights.  The Fountain Show takes place on a stage constructed on the sea.  It will be shown through the world’s first ‘Living Screen’ at night, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere. The Big Ocean Show is a performance utilising the sea, the beach and ships.  It will be staged on a weekly basis with different performances that reflect the theme of the Expo.  The World Ocean Performance features performances of artists from Korea and abroad and will take place on the floating stage utilizing the sea as a  platform for cultural activities.
